Internal bleeding after Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

My daughter had Gastric Sleeve surgery 3 months ago. She was given A prescription of Xarelto to prevent blood clots the same day as surgery. This was an outpatient surgery. She was bleeding terribly at the wound site. I called the doctor and he said not to bring her in that he would see her the next morning. I took her in and she was in extreme pain and still bleeding very bad. He said she was okay for the 4 hour drive home. I was extremely concerned. He said to skip the Xarelto for 1 day then start back. She was in terrible pain on the 3rd day after surgery and was very pale and weak. We called the doctor and told him what was going on. He said NOT to take her to the hospital. Against his wishes we took her anyway. She was almost dead from internal bleeding when she got there. They gave her several units of blood and rushed her to a larger hospital. Since then she has had 3 leaks and 3 infected hematomas. Has anyone ever had an experience like this? She is still trying to get well..

OMG My prayers go out to your daughter and thank god you went to the hospital. Since I'm a big chicken when I read things like this I question what I'm about to do. Where was this done what city? I think having it at a outpatient surgery would worry me.

Please keep us posted about how your daughter is doing.

I'm surprised they did not keep her overnight. I haven't had my surgery yet, but most people were kept a day or two for observation.

Omg! I had internal bleeding. My surgeon was incredible. Had his own personal Mobile number. I was told by him that I was to ring immediately with the slightest worry. Thank god I did as I spend 4 extra days in hospital post 7 days out of surgery. Was given IV antibiotics and tummy injections for blood clots. He was brilliant.

I bled more than others which formed a clot that got infected. Any signs of chills or temps its straight to the doc. He gave me a scan straight away and bloods were taken.

I am so sorry your daughter has gone through this because my surgeon told me that if my inflammation markers didnt come down it was straight to gastric bypass. He doesnt muck around. I recovered quickly but I guess thats due to quick response.

I sincerely hope your daughter will be ok. Im disgusted at her doctor.

Im concerned about her 3 leaks. If all else fails please seek another surgeon and please keep us posted. I know exactly what shes going through!

Sounds like she had a horrible doctor, would definitely make a complaint and switch to someone else. Thank God you didn't listen to his advice and followed your instincts, best wishes for a speedy recovery for your daughter, sorry she had to go through this.

She had it done at Alabama Weight Loss in Birmingham, AL!! She was self pay. $11,900. You can look it up. My advice to people is to NEVER do Outpatient (same day) surgery with weight loss surgery. It is very risky!! We didn't know this! I wish we knew then what we know now. She hasn't used the AL doctor since we left. We have a bariatric specialist who is trying hard to get her FIXED. Thank you for your support. This is the first time I have told this story publicly, but as we sit in this hospital AGAIN and I look at my sick daughter who is fighting for her life I have to VENT!! She has 2 small children. Please pray (if you don't mind) that she heals from this horrible nightmare. I haven't even mentioned all of the stuff that we have gone thru. OH!! And did I mention the $700,000 hospital bill!

Sending positive vibes to your daughter, this is a terrible thing that has happened. I had mine outpatient along with many others and didn't have any problems. I wouldn't blame it on being outpatient. I will say everyone I seen that was outpatient wasn't extremely heavy. Plus they do a leak check while you're still under.

Hi had the same issues in week 2, all caused by medications. Spent a week in hospital veins in both arms collapsed, it was a nightmare but by day 4 it all turned around and the bleeding stopped, still feel weak but I have to focus on the positives and the fact that I have lost nearly 52lbs and have a new beginning. My thoughts and prayers are with your daughter.

Prayer in Time of Sickness

Merciful Lord, the true comfort and hope of those who suffer, I entreat that You accept the prayers which I offer to You in my affliction. Grant that this sickness which You have permitted to come upon me may bring me closer to You and lead me to a more righteous life.

Master, You send down upon us both affliction and consolation. You are the Lord of life and health. You alone can raise me up from my bed of sickness. Without Your gracious help I cannot hope to recover.

It is true that I am a sinner unworthy of Your mercy. But because of Your goodness You receive everyone who turns to You with a humble heart and a repentant spirit.

My Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Say to me as You said to the sinful woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” Surely I will not forget Your warning to the paralyzed man, “Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you.” My health is in Your hands. You need say only the word and I will get well again. Yet Your will, not mine, be done. You know best what leads to my health and my salvation. You have bestowed many blessings upon me throughout my life, and I pray that You will not forsake me now, in this time of sickness.

I bless and glorify Your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
