Can't find any exercise I like!

Recommended Posts

@@sarahb309 My favorite exercises are pushing my luck and jumping to conclusions. :P Seriously, if you are looking for cheap, it is hard to beat walking. And if that gets to boring, try hiking over rough terrain, climbing, etc.

I have found that I can use my Xbox 360 (with the Kinect) and use the Sports games. With the Kinect you are the controller so you have to jump, squat, etc.

Also, I have a resistance band from when I went through PT for the arthritis in my shoulder and I found some exercises that I can do online.

If you're looking for a more social experience that mixes up workouts, there are lot of class-style places out there that are supposed to be very good. I've heard good things about Orange Theory and Pure Barre, both have lots of locations and look like they give you a very good workout. It takes the thought process out of it, just go in and do what they say. Someone else mentioned Zumba, I haven't tried it but my wife absolutely loves it.

I second Zumba, it's so fun it doesn't feel like you're working out!

My son recently started getting into rock climbing. He goes to an indoor facility and at least near us the prices are pretty reasonable. I want to start going once I get stronger and lose a bit more weight. I've done it once or twice in my thinner days and it's a real work out.

Way to go on your weightloss!

Lots of good suggestions.
Mine are try something for a month solid and then if you don't like it switch. (Sounds like you might already be doing this.)

Plan for different things based on the season or your schedule. Outside stuff in summer, videos/machines in winter. Switching up a workout is a good thing anyway. Nothing says you have to do one thing year round.

Set up a reward system to give you something to look forward to. For example after 20 workouts you can get that scarf, shoes, game, headphones, etc you really want.

All the best

I love, love, love ZUMBA. I am one of the most uncoordinated people in the world, but we just have so much fun it's not like exercise at all. I also do a class called Body Pump. It is like synchronized weight lifting. It's not really fun, but LOVE the results. I started walking after surgery. A 70+ year old lady in my body pump class did a marathon. I decided to try to run a half marathon. At first, it REALLY sucked. I mean SUCKED. BUT, I had told everyone in the world that I was running a half marathon. So, I did it. I actually ran one before the original one. I have now ran 4. I am planning on a triathlon next year and then a full marathon in January of 2019. I had to stop running for a bit because I am pregnant with baby # 2. Once he/she is here will start training again. Sometimes you just have to keep at something for awhile. I want to try a BARRE class. I do some yoga as well. If you can find a workout buddy that helps too.

If you want to burn some calories, and learn something that can save your life, I would recommend finding a studio or facility that teaches Krav Maga.< watch this vid.

An hour long session should burn about 1200 calories based on my workout monitors and you will learn the Israeli close quarter combat fighting technique. It's not really a "martial art" it's more "martial" than "art". I encourage any woman especially to look into this training as they run you through real world scenarios and how to defend yourself against those who mean you harm. This technique is taught to all Israeli soldiers for unarmed combat and is not intended as a competitive sport. It is meant to inflict the most amount of pain and damage on an aggressor and provide an opportunity to escape the situation in the shortest amount of time possible with the most basic of movements. Most importantly IT WORKS. I speak from experience having been attacked and employing the tactics I learned during a night out with some friends in a karaoke bar in Georgia. Attacker was slightly taller than me and much better build as I had just started my WLS journey. He decided like all school yard bullies to go after the "fat kid" first. 3 cop cars and 1 EMS ambulance later he was taken to the hospital for a massive tears in all the ligaments of his left knee, and damage to his right eye where two of my fingers penetrated past his orbital socket. I was cut with a broken beer bottle but released without further treatment. It's a tough workout when you begin but the benefits are invaluable.

I know this is an older thread, so I don't know if you've found your solution, but most YMCAs have an Open Door program which allows people to join on a sliding scale to allow everyone to be a member. If cost is an issue for you, look into that and then you could have access to a pool all year.

I learned about the Jillian Michaels app from this site and I am áddicted. Her programs are great, you can play your own music behind her, each exercise is only 20 seconds, and it switches up a lot. Any questions are answered within 24hrs. It’s not pricy either.25 min workouts with cool exercises. Great little videos that you don’t need to stare at the whole time.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
