Worried About Pain Meds

Recommended Posts

My RNY is this coming Monday. I'm a bit concerned about the pain meds they're going to give me in the hospital.. I get Migraines, and I'm not sure what pain meds may or may not be a Migraine trigger for me. I didn't think about it until I saw someone say the other day that she got a migraine from the dilaudid. If I were to request something like Toradol instead of a narcotic, is that just laughable, as far as being nowhere near strong enough to cover any pain?

I did not have any pain meds after my surgery. I was sore and it did hurt when I coughed but it was nothing that I couldn't handle. My surgeon and all the nurses in the hospital were surprised that I didn't want the pain meds.

I think that each person is different and thus their level of pain that they can take. You may surprise yourself and you may not need the meds.

The anesthesiologist gave me a numbing shot in my side before surgery. It was to help reduce the need for the pain medicines that can make a patient nauseous. My pain level at the hospital was 2-3. I have not took any pain meds since leaving the hospital. My stomach was sore as if I had been exercising. Prepare for the Worse, but it was not nearly as bad as I had thought it might be.

Wanted to add, I did have some Gas pain in my lower back and upper chest area. I just used a heating pad on those areas.

I have very little pain other than really sore abs (that felt like I'd done 1000 crunches). If it were up to me, I wouldn't have taken any pain meds while in the hospital, but the nurses made me use my morphine pump so I could get out of bed and walk more comfortably (because of my abs). I felt almost no pain at all if I was lying down or sitting up - it was just transitioning.

the pain meds they sent me home with sat unopened

people are all over the board with the pain issue, but lots of us really didn't have any, so you may be fine.

I took no pain meds after I left the recovery room. I didn't need to. My pain levels were at most a 1 or 2. Walking every 2 hours in the hospital helps to reduce the gas pains.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
