Does anyone else regret their surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 7 weeks out today and my recovery has been hell. I've been in the hospital 4 times for dehydration and Vitamin deficiency. I have a stricture and ulcer. Couldn't keep food down for weeks which led to numbness in my hands and feet. Had a few good days after dilation but alas the stricture is rearing its head again. I am down 47lbs which is great but my weight loss was halted for about a week due to lack of nutrition. Still regretting my surgery at the moment, just need hope that it gets better. I didn't think my health would be effected for the worst after surgery.

I wouldn't say I regret the surgery but still haven't gotten to the point where I'm glad I did it. I'm 4 weeks post op.

So sorry to read about your nightmare. I hope you are now on the mend. Big hugs!!

Oh ya at week 4 I was definitely not glad I had got the surgery. I'm at a point where there's worst things than being overweight. I'm still dedicated to the process, but very weary.

It takes awhile to return to a new normal. I think I finally reached my happy state at 6 months post-op when all the problems seemed to melt away.

Every day will get a little better. If you are struggling with a stricture, take the time to get it cleared up and things will get better for you.

I have never for even 1 second regretted my decision to have bypass surgery. it was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Recovery is a process that requires patients. There are going to be good days and bad days....but the bad days will go away after some time.

The lifestyle takes some getting used to.

I'm so sorry you are having such a rough time. I'm hoping they are able to find a permanent fix for you so you can start to enjoy your journey.

Pretty much anything in life that doesn't go as planned will bring on regret. It may be tough but, give it more time. Time heals most things. ;)

I am so sorry you are going thru this. I can totally understand this!! I had my RNY on July 2, 2013. I started having trouble around the 4 to 6 weeks after my surgery. In Nov of 2013 I had my first ENDOSCOPE with a dilation. Again in DEC, Jan 2014 July 2014 with my last one on Jan 2015. I have had no problems since. My DR talked about moving my Stoma down to healthy tissue. But I haven't had a problem since!! It does suck for sure. But believe, me it was all worth it!! I lost 132#'s in 6 months. I did have an 8# gain. But I have maintained my 125#'s for 2 and 1/2 years. I know it is hard right now but hang in there it will and it will be all worth it. BTW they ended up using a size 18 balloon before it stopped the strictures. I know it is bad and you are wondering WHAT THE HELL did I do, but hang tight. and KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

Nope, I don't regret it at all (not my lap band nor my revision to sleeve this year) but having said that, I had an extremely easy recovery. I think if I had issues like some, I'd be feeling similar to the way you feel. I hope you feel better soon.

Time is a wonderful healer. This will be but a memory at the one year mark if all goes well!!

I don't regret a thing about the Wls. Even at down times. My life is richer in many ways. Good luck

I'm sorry to hear that you were going through a rough patch. Praying you are healed. I hope things are getting better for you day by day. Keep positive and I'm always praying for everyone here. ;-) :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
