Will I be broken forever?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 10/24. Tomorrow will be 1 week post surgery.

I knew everyone has different experiences but I've always done well with surgeries and medications and medical thing. This is nothing like I could have imagined. I knew I wouldn't be hungry but I don't think I actually grasped or frankly believed that was possible. Now I find myself barely eating anything. Not my Protein drinks or yogurt and drinking is the hardest thing in the world. It's physically painful in my chest to drink.

Emotionally I've felt at Rock bottom. The nausea after my surgery has me vomiting brown liquid and I kept whining "why did I do this to myself?" I've been a complete recluse ignoring phone calls and texts and in the spirit of complete honesty, I have not even Pet my dog since I've been home from the hospital. This animal I've taken care of since he was 8 weeks I have no desire to be around.

My family is incredibly supportive and I know this will make me sound ridiculously ungrateful... but they are so supportive it's annoying. I truly do know how lucky I am to have a family like I do because I have seen and read a lot about unsupportive families and spouses.

They keep telling me it will get better and that they know how I feel but how can they? They have not had this surgery and have no idea what it's been like this past week.

I just need to know if this does get better? When will I feel as amazing as everyone says they feel? When will I be able to drink liquids without pain?

I know that things will never be as they were and I'm glad for that, but today I just need to know that someone does understand the way I feel and that there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

Sorry for the saga. I think that was officially longer than any opening credit of a star wars movie

KJ, it gets better. It gets so much better you won't believe it. The first weeks were so rough it had me questioning why I did it. You have to give your body time to heal and your mind time to get with the program. And at a week out, you have anesthesia still working its way out of your system. You need a lot of rest. Go give your pup a scratch behind the ears. And lean on folks here. It's been a great help to me.

@@kjkashmaniac Tomorrow - get out and get some fresh air. Walk your dog! Let the endorphins kick the hormones down. You need to concentrate on fluids for now. Make sure you are taking a PPI and anti-nausea meds. Try drinking hot tea or broth. You will feel better. Stay strong!

I don't think that I could have put it in words any better. You described my post op experience to a T. I was sleeved 10/12. I am JUST now starting to feel like a real person again. Today is the first day that I haven't cried. I even went outside with my toddlers for a while. This time last week I was convinced that it would be easier if I just rolled over and never got back up.

I absolutely promise you that it does get better. You WILL start feeling human again. Push through, go find a support group (I went to an over eaters anonymous group last night for the first time and loved it), tell your family that you are not ok right now and let them help you.

This will all be worth it. For now, find something small to Celebrate every day and remember that you're not alone.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I decided to go to work tomorrow. I sit at a desk all day and won't be doing anything of real importance. I feel like maybe if I rejoin the world it will feel better.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. You have no idea what it means.

You are not broken, just at the beginning of a huge life change. It does get better everyday, follow your plan, let your body heal. You got this.

I know its annoying lol but yes it does get better. I just went back to work 2 weeks ago after being home for a month because I had a lot of other side effects I didn't think I would have. I was miserable, unhappy I would say "why did I do this to myself" Im still working through it. It's definitely not easy but it does get better and you will feel way better than you do now patience is

I agree it does get better, you have to build up to your fluids and Protein..give it a chance, take a breath and let it work. When you start seeing the results you'll feel better about it. I think everyone (at first) asks what did I do. Now most would say I wish I did it sooner...

Goodness I was sleeved the same day as you and have had some of the same thoughts this first week was HARD. However, today I'm already sensing the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm finally able to go without my pain meds and I actually had a BM (hadn't gone since 2days before surgery). It wasn't easy and while I'm on the subject if you haven't already done so you may want to pick up some stool softners. Your braver than me heading back to work already though. I'm taking at least another week.

Best of luck to you!

I had a pretty smooth recovery but it was still about 10 days before I stopped regretting the surgery. I still have my moments too but I'm only 3 weeks out so I assume they'll get fewer and farther between. Once you can start eating some more food you might find it easier. The liquid stage was really hard for me, I was so sick of the shakes and Soups. I felt much better when I moved to purees. I'm still struggling to get enough calories and Proteins some days but it really does get easier as time passes. Promise!

Also if you're still vomiting you should call your surgeon and let them know, get some anti nausea meds.

dogs are unconditional love, and studies show that petting one you have a connection too releases happy hormones for you and your pet, and lowers stress levels. You certainly need to lower your stress levels. I feel sorry for you, but your poor dog wants to nurse and love on you, for God sakes don't turn him away!

For me, it was definitely harder than I had planned for. Things do get much better day by day. The benefits I see now far outweigh the struggles I had the first month or so. Yesterday I was sightseeing on a trip to Dublin and walked 22k steps! Would have keeled over before surgery!

Good luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
