Ensure Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone. I am 4 day post op and today is finally the first day i am not having dry heaving. When i was in the hospital i was given ensure Protein shakes but could not get them down. The gave me the Proti-15 shakes and i was able to get those down. Now that im home i dont think the proti-15 ones are not helping me as i feel like im really light headed. I had my husband go buy me the ensures that i was given in the hospital and they are def more effective.

My question is should i be drinking them? I was given them in the hospital and my dr seem to think they would be fine but so many people are saying no. They have 160 Calories, 16 grs of Protein. I dont want to cause any harm to my surgery as i had complications while in surgery and i dont want to cause no side issues as my diabetes has completely gone into remission and im not taking any meds anymore.

What should i do?

thanks for all the help in advance

I would contact your surgeon/clinic to be sure. It is important to not only look at the protein/calorie count, but the amount of sugars. If it is less than 5, you are probably good. Have you tried the PREMIER Protein shakes? They are 160 calories, 1 sugar, and 30 grams of Protein.

What is your immediate post op diet plan? Are you only drinking Protein Shakes? What about other fluids like Water, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello?

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes.
It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Many experience problems drinking Protein Shakes. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Whatever Protein shake you settle on it should be low on sugar and high on protein.

Thanks Guys. I have been doing Water and protien shakes. These Ensure have 4 grams of sugar but i will call my doctor tomorrow to confirm. Since i was dry heaving for a while i was only doing Water and the protien shakes. Today i actually will be trying some low sodium chicken broth. i also have sugar free Popsicle so its another item to try.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
