Nervous about Stage 4

My doc said it's time for real food and I'm super nervous. Will I consume too many calories? What are the best starter foods? I just want to make good choices. He said cooked veggies, Beans to start. Any previous posts or advice for us beginners? Thanks!!

I got to add my first "chewable" food this week -- well-cooked green Beans, cottage cheese, and string cheese. I have had no issues at all. I have had to be even more purposeful about getting my fluids in with the 30 minutes before and after eating each of the "solid" foods. But I have still managed to get my 64 oz in; it just takes all day (even with me being able to drink more than I could last week or the week before).

It's going to be physically impossible for you to consume too many calories, unless you literally eat every time your stomach empties, and drink Coke between meals. I am eating four meals a day now, with two 30g Protein scoops in crystal light, and I don't break 500 calories. Then with my 30 minutes of elliptical, I'm burning about 200 calories. So when my TDEE is around 3,300 calories and my total input is 500 calories, I'm not too worried. :)

Trust me, get an app like MyFitnessPal and start programming in everything you consume, in the exact quantities. You will see that it would be phenomenally difficult for you to eat too many calories. You'd have to actually work at it. Just follow your surgeon and dietitian's recommendations and you're going to be fine. Just never touch any drinks with sugar in them, or carbonation!

I think Hormel chili is great, very easy to begin with (and also good to mix with a flavorless Protein powder like Genepro). I also liked Trader Joe's turkey meatballs, with a bit of mashed potato. Very easy starter foods. And scrambled eggs! Don't forget those. :) Just chew everything until you could suck it through a straw, before you swallow it. Let it sit for a while before you take another bite, because it'll feel funny at first. Get used to the feeling, and pay attention to how your stomach fills up. Eventually you'll know exactly how much food it takes to fill your stomach and you can pre-package it, which is what I do. Works perfectly.

Dont worry about calories at all. Focus on good quality Protein and veggies and you will do fine.

I remember starting with a perfectly cooked piece of fish or chicken. You need to make sure it is moist not dry so dont over cook.

One of my first meals was a chicken breast cooked just to done, not over. It was super juicy. I liked to use a low sugar spagetti sauce and a sprinkling of cheese. I could maybe eat an ounce or two and i would be stuffed for hours.

In the beginning i always would make some sort of low sugar sauce or non fat gravy.

But my absolute favorite was fish. My tummy loved it.

It took some time for me to be able to eat beef and pork and even now, i can only eat a small amount and it has to be a very tender cut.

It was probably 4 months post before i could eat shrimp but now it is one of my favorites.

I ate and still eat alot of cottage cheese and greek yogurt.

Just take it slowly, chew very well and did i say take it slowly?! LOL. The worst feeling is when you eat to fast and you feel a huge lump in your chest. It can really ruin a meal and that can be caused by eating too fast or not chewing well enough.

My pouch still is what I call her "PRISSY POUCH"!! I do eat a LOT of beans!! I'm 3 years out and it still is my favorite things. I do lots of refried Beans with cheese and a little sour cream. I can't do anything that is dry. The only beef I can do is hamburger in a casserole or something juicy. NO STEAK pretty limited on chicken also. Thank goodness, I LOVE Beans. I also eat Nalley's chili beans. But I do cook my own. I make Soup and freeze it in my size packages. There are so many great recipes out there, check out The World According to EggFace, Pintrest. Heck I'm getting ready to try Lentils. LOL Push for the highest bang for your buck with your Protein. Like was said you won't be able to eat to many calories. You have a tiny tiny tummy now!! It took about an hour and 15 minutes to eat 1 1/2 ounces of tuna and about 10 green peas. The tuna was a little dry so I'm worn out from chewing. My stomach feels full, or I am aware of my stomach if that makes sense. I guess it's a start

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
