I'm very very sorry about what you went through, and agree with @@Babbs on the malpractice. When it comes to your weight, I highly advise low carb and high high Protein. I'm not sure how far out you are, but I cannot eat Pasta or bread. Those are empty carbs and not giving you any nutrients.

I hope things go better - I understand how you can slip up after that kind of trauma, but get your mind back in the game so you stop eating the wrong foods.

Have you looked into a therapist? I see one every week and it's very valuable. Best wishes!

I did hire a lawyer because not only did he try to kill me, I endured this terrible burn that after 4 months of healing left me with a horrible scar on my abdomen. Once Umbach found I hired an atty, he sent me a letter stating he cannot see me as a patient. HA HA HA...like I would ever want to see him again. Despite paying him $12,500.00 Cash....and him almost killing me, he sent me a bill for $55,000.00 for his surgical center having to keep me until ambulance arrived while they had to reintubate me and put me on a ventilator. I hope no one ever has to experience a surgeon like Umbach. Guess that's what happens when you are in hurry to get patients out of the IT and move on to other task. All about money!

@@cheryl417 I am truly sorry for what you went through. I also had Dr. Umbach, but my experience was stellar.

However, I had a previous surgery (not weight related) that was botched and I had to enter into a malpractice case.
I know how it feels to not only have your health compromised and have to live with that the rest of your life, but to also have to relive the experience for the case and the stress that comes with it. Please be kind to yourself through that experience.

I'm also on insulin and am 7 days post op. I worked with my endocrine specialist on a post operative plan. I had to stop all my diabetic meds and rarely take insulin these days with the lack of carbs.

I know it's so hard and I'm sorry this is such a struggle for you but as folks are saying you must change your habits to change your weight.

What Protein supplement are you using? There are a lot of tasty options. Do you have a written diet plan that mapped out everything post surgery?

I feel there are always signs of a bad surgeon/dr... the dr I initially saw for the surgery seemed very rude and money minded but I still decided to do the surgery with him cuz I had an issue with the date of surgery and he agreed to do it on a short notice but 3 days before the surgery I felt I'm not comfortable with him and decided to cancel my surgery if I can't find another surgeon.. luckily I called the most reliable Bariatric surgeon in Miami and he said he can do the surgery on the same date... and the dr who performed my surgery is truely an amazing dr... after my surgery I told my friend about the initial surgeon and she told me he had lot of bad reviews and has very bad reputation and his patients have suffered a lot ... I thanked god that last minute I made the right decision to change the surgeon.... when it comes to ur body and health never compromise .. if u get a feeling that u r not comfortable with the dr change... even if it's last minute and ur already in the hospital and ready for surgery walk out !! I hope u get well soon... maybe see another surgeon and ask him to take a better look

I will have my surgery on Nov 1st. Since 1 August, I've only been allowed whole grains 1-2 X a week, AT MOST. Even after I have surgery and I am on regular foods (6 weeks post surgery), I will still have limited carbs (whole grains) 1-2X a week. I will never have mac & cheese, frozen processed food, etc. Also, I am required to drink a Meal Replacement shake once daily, for the rest of my life. You honestly can't wonder why you aren't losing weight, eating what you are eating?!?!? I hope you get back on the wagon, and follow the program like intended. Good luck!

1st off, I'm so sorry you're having to deal with all of this, and without your surgeon's team for support! You really have an uphill battle!!

Prednisone will work against you - it will cause cravings and weight gain all on its own. My rheumatologist (I have RA/PsA) won't give me prednisone unless I'm in a huge flare. If your rheumy hasn't started working you towards other anti-inflammatories, find a new rheumy. Methotrexate didn't work for me (and then I had an allergic reaction) but sulfasalazine is helping quite a bit, and we're considering plaquenil. We'll move to biologics before we'll do prednisone again unless I get a horrendous flare. I know how awesome prednisone is, I just got through telling my PCP that I wish it was safe to take long-term because I feel completely human on 10-20mg a day. But the side effects long term are awful, and it will absolutely work against you with weight loss.

I can't do ultra-low carb like many of the people here, but I work to keep my carbs moderately low (I usually get 70-80g a day) and make sure I'm eating complex carbs like whole grains and Beans and not eating simple sugars. I focus mainly on getting my Protein and Water in, though some days it's very hard and I fall short but I keep working to do better the next day. If I get all my Protein and fluids in, I often don't have room for a lot of carbs.

I am so out of shape, have a reconstructed knee (not artificial, but they had to repair/replace cartilage and re-structure the joint), and the best thing I have found for exercise is to get in the pool. I found a close gym with an indoor pool. I can't even kick laps yet, but just get in and walk. The cooler Water keeps the inflammation down, and the buoyancy keeps from overloading my joints. When I had my knee reconstructed in 2008, I couldn't afford a gym, but found that my city had an indoor pool at the senior citizen's center, and was able to go water walk there. So I highly recommend finding a pool you can use to get some exercise in and get those joints moving.

I don't know what your options are for finding a doc since you don't have your original one. If you can't find a bariatric surgeon who will work with you, try and find a good PCP who is educated about WLS or maybe a gastroenterologist. If you can't find one to follow up with, there are a lot of resources online. Which isn't the best option, but it's better than having no support. I have been very impressed with the videos by Dr. Weiner https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4qN8k1ix0DoCLM6VhDvz8w for example. Several bariatric centers publish their post-surgical programs. I highly recommend that you get on one and work really hard to follow it. Even though I can't follow the ultra low-carb programs that most here are using, I'm working really hard to change my eating patterns and my relationship with food permanently so that my tool will work.

Ok, let's not jump on this person. First of all my cousin had sleeve surgery in Las Vegas by Dr Umbagh also. She is 4 years and lost every pound she wanted to loose and has not gained any back. She had a great experience with him and his team. Forget about what happened because that is not going to change things going forward. Concentrate on the future and make some changes to get back on track. Science says that if you eat less than 1200 calories then your body will use your fat for fuel. That is a fact. I would recommend going back to basics. Start back on shakes and make sure you are getting 80 to 100 grams of Protein. Keep your net carbs under 50 for the entire day. Cut out all sugars if you can. You most likely went through a stall when you stopped loosing weight the first time. This is completely normal, the body is going to adjust. Stop eating all of that crap food. Just get back to basics and I promise you will get back on track. Good luck with your journey. Stay positive. It will be worth it in the end. Hard work takes time so stay with it.

Great suggestion. I don't know how many PCPs are knowledgeable (unless also specialists in GE), but a good Gastro is. Any gastro should have learned a lot by now, given the many years bariatric surgery has been in existence. Good grief, they sent patients to have their stomachs and intestines mucked with by surgeons long before anyone thought of procedures for weight-loss alone.

@@cheryl417, you're dealing with a lot that I know nothing or little about, but I do sympathize. My best suggestion now that you've put matters in the hands of a lawyer, is to put your energy toward healing and finding a solution(s) so that you can lose more weight. The possible medical malpractice is now the lawyer's job. For you to make an 'emotional career' out of that part of things will, at best, get you nowhere or, worse, make you feel worse.

I know you've got your hands full trying to up your Protein and pursue a malpractice suit. (Don't neglect your Vitamins, either.) But I'd like to second the pool suggestion. Before you dismiss it out of hand, I have PTTD - basically, the tendon in my right foot is overstretched and tearing. Overdoing it can literally destroy my ankle. I have to wear an orthotic boot, so walk - walk - walk is right out for me, too. I've been doing small hand weights and an exercise ring while seated, but it's nowhere near as good as the pool.

Seriously - my PT is *amazing* and came up with a ton of exercises I can do in the pool to build up my ankle, core, and other trouble areas. Squats, heel raises, front and side kicks, arm exercises with a kick board - and all specifically modified not hurt my ankle. I think my incisions have finally healed to the point where I can start up again. (Though I'll probably have someone drive me for a while since I'm still puny.)

Seriously consider starting PT before knee surgery - weight loss and joint strengthening could do a world of good and make your surgery way more successful. Right now my orthopedic surgeon is discussing *three* separate, highly invasive surgeries on my ankle, but agreed to let me try PT for a couple more months. With sufficient weight loss and strength building, there's a good chance I can avoid at least one of them - God willing, all three. I'm a little over 3 weeks post op, so I guess it's time to get motivated! And start going back to my PT

@@cheryl417 You ate virtually no Protein today...you won't lose without following your plan. The depression/sadness you're feeling is pretty understandable after such a traumatic surgery experience, but don't further sabotage yourself by eating 95% carbs. You're diabetic, and that's not acceptable for your diabetes, either.

Do you have access to a dietitian or someone who can help you with your food choices? You lost 20 lbs so you clearly know what to do...you need to clear your head and reset yourself.

I'm sorry you went through so much with the surgery, but it truly doesn't make any sense to hurt yourself even more by eating poorly. Your long-term health is at stake here, you simply CAN'T do this to yourself.

@@Armygalbonnie Are you having your surgery at Ft. Sill? I've never, ever heard of a post-op sleeve plan where you have to use Meal Replacements for the rest of your life.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
