You should ALWAYS choose what you want to hear. It makes life much more interesting and fun.

If I listened to what many people told me, I would spend quite a bit of time fornicating with myself. :)

Well, there's that.

It's a pretty simple explanation, actually.

You know how we always hear about "so and so had the surgery and gained all their weight back because they weren't ready to change"?

Most of those posts are from the so and so's of the world. You know, the ones that give WLS a bad name. Statistically speaking, it's about 50% of us.

Until the WLS industry decides to stop cranking out these surgeries in order to make a buck or a million and get more stringent about vetting who is actually ready to handle the complete life change it requires to make it successful, there will continue to be so and so's.

Damn, it really is like getting a driver's license! I think quite a few drivers should never have gotten permission to drive a car at all.

All jokes aside - there is no way you can tell if someone is going to "mess up" after surgery or not. You'll never know for sure. There are people getting heart surgery and don't stop smoking or start smoking again, there are people who start drinking again after getting a new liver, even though they stopped drinking long enough to be able to get that liver etc. - and how many times before surgery (being on the umpteenth diet - oops, I mean lifestyle change of course) did we think This Is Finally It! This Time It Will Be Different! This Time I Will Succeed! - and yet we didn't.

About that "lifestyle change": obviously we all needed surgery to be able to do that change and we all messed up a great deal before surgery when it comes to "lifestyle changes", otherwise we wouldn't have been eligible for surgery in the first place.

Lipstick, I've been nothing but respectful and never implied anyone "STFU". Maybe it's that kind of abrasiveness that gets me.

OH! So you are the keepers of the WLS! I am so glad you are there to protect it.

What were you saying about being "nothing but respectful", again?

I assume this was also "non abrasive"?

;):D

WLS- I don't care what you think of me, or the length of time on this board or dealing with all things sleeve, but I do know that ive read everything I can and taken every piece of advice from my doc to heart. You keep talking down to people if it makes you feel all mighty on a message board. At least there are those here with pure intent to help others without belittling.

I did not comment on you or your preparation for surgery and life beyond it, both of which I heretofore had no knowledge. I did not express an opinion of you; I have none. The topic is neither about you nor my view of any individual. It is about ways in which people make unreasonable and ludicrous demands, throw tantrums and delude themselves. It is about the frustration and fed-upness they engender. I accept no responsibility for your taking my notes personally. As you and I do not communicate well, I'll let it slide now. I do wish you well with your bariatric and weight-loss endeavors.

I didn't say anything about "messing up". Most of us mess up post op. But you can't argue the fact that there are people who weren't prepared for the complete lifestyle change it requires to make this surgery successful? Otherwise you wouldn't see 50% of us fail.

If having 90% of your stomach removed isn't motivation enough to get your sh*t together, then I don't know what would be at that point! But wouldn't a comprehensive process with mental health evaluations and then therapy if needed and intensive nutritional and exercise classes be more prudent than the joke of a system they have now where you're basically put through the protocol of an hour psychological exam and an hour meeting with your NUT and then deemed ready for surgery? Wouldn't that help people be BETTER prepared?

That really was my point.

Of course not. However, what would it take to really prepare people for WLS? Is that even possible? To be eligible for surgery you should already have gone through everything else that is available to lose weight so you should be quite educated about all the theory regarding lifestyle changes (nutrition, exercise, therapy etc.) - you would have to self-pay to come around all of this stuff. Maybe I'm underestimating the number of self-payers in the US.

In Germany people have to go through months long so called "multimodal concepts" since a whole while that might last from 3 months up to 9 months, depending on the insurance company and/or WLS center, to get approved for surgery (and even then it feels like playing the lottery and patients can be denied coverage).

Yet patients still have problems losing all of the excess weight or struggle with major regain. Would be interesting to compare failure/success rates though with patients who got minimal counseling before surgery.

I can't focus because of a brain injury. I would have loved it if I was given a packet of step by step instructions and attended classes. That would have been awesome. I just meet with the dietician once a month. The meetings are just kind of like, check ins. I don't get much out of them. I haven't been able to lose the 15 pounds my insurance wanted me to. Now, everyone is getting mad at me, but I don't don't feel like I had the support to begin with. She told me to do Atkins meals because I am very poor at planning because of the brain injury, but I am also, salt sensitive. Someone on one of the other posts told me that those, Atkins meals are loaded with salt. This is getting frustrating. I only have 6 weeks left and if I don't get the 15 pounds off, that's it.

@@summerset

And now we have come full circle.

BEHAVIOR is usually an indication of success or failure with anything, correct? If these programs have a higher chance to help modify the behavior of these folks before WLS, I feel they would have a better chance at success.

That being said, I sometimes see behaviors in these forums that are not indicative of success. Hence the whole point of the OP's topic.

You get out what you put into this for sure!

Oh, and @@summerset, nice chatting with you :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
