Informed Decision, How do you determine the best Medical Tourism Group?

Recommended Posts

I am back in the group, my lap band was a failure. I am going to have the gastric sleeve procedure. I would like to know how you decided on your Medical Tourism Group used for procedure outside the United States. I know the procedure and the surgeon I would like to use. I am finding it difficult to determine who would be the best group to utilize for this journey. The surgeon is affiliated with more than one group, so any advise, suggestions are welcome, questions to ask, details to be aware of, criteria for travel, etc.

My husbands friend and his gf told us of one they used. We used WeightLossAgents. We went to Tijuana. My husband and I both did. We had sleeve done on 6/24. I am down 33 and he down 45! I felt great and no issues he has a leak, so not what we expected. Not even sure if insurance will cover any hospital cost at this moment.

@@menda, I'm sorry your husband has a leak! how is he doing? When did he discover the leak? Don't they do leak tests before they let you go home? What kind of leak test did they do on him? Did you have surgery in Mexico? I'm full of questions, I do hope he is doing alright!

It is not wise to have surgery outside the US. What standards do they follow for safe outcomes? They don't, because everyone goes back home and they don't have to deal with it. Have it here, buy insurance on the procedure (BLIS) and stay safe. Also: follow up with a good team helps the wt loss. Good luck

He found the leak about three weeks after. Yes they did a leak test before we left. He was fine. When it started we do not know. He had trouble drinking and he thought his pain was from his back. He fractured it a week before surgery. They did a leak test it's not large. He was in hospital for a week on antibiotics and a pic line for nutrition. Tested again yesterday. It is smaller but not healed. He has two weeks before they test again. If healing it great if it does not heal may do a stint. So praying for better outcome. He's not there because of our decision to go to Mexico. It's happens here too. There was two ladies who was there with same issue only in worse condition who had their sugery here in state. So it is a complication that can happen anywhere. I feel great. Only thing I have trouble with is I always drank alot. So just teaching myslef to sip. So far so good.

My husband did come home yesterday. Will be a long hard road for him. He just wants food in his mouth. He loves to eat. He is regretting his decision at this point. Said he would rather be over weight. He will be on pic line only for these two weeks. The healing will determine. If he continues pic line or will start on liquids only for few weeks.

I'm glad he is home, and it is a long road. I had a friend here in the states have it done, she had a leak, hospitalized twice, PICC and PEG feeding tube for months...probably don't want to share that part with your husband at this point ;) I'm certain he is frustrated and hungry. He will see the benefit later down the road I hope! My friend is doing fabulous and enjoying activities and doing things she had never done before.

What hospital in Tijuana did he have the procedure, and who was the surgeon. Have you spoke to the surgeon?

I have not spoken to the surgeon. I have spoke with people who sent us there and that's one thing I wish we would have thought about. But I still wouldn't change it. By not getting it in states your lacking the Care that you could have and support. I personally recommend taking some classes about the the surgery itself and care after. Or just loads of research. My Dr was Marcelo Hernandez and we was at the HMN hospital. The hospital is nothing like ours..at first I was like what am I thinking. But jumped in anyway.

Was Marcelo Hernandez his Dr too? That's who I'm scheduled to have surgery with on Thursday and now I'm so worried! I don't want a leak!

Just a update on my husband. He has been off pic line for two weeks still on some diet restrictions. He is feeling much better and the leak has completely healed with no additional surgery. So thankful for that. I am down 45 pounds from the sleeve so is he. I feel better and can't wait to drop more. Thank you all for your kind words.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
