How much time should I take off?

Recommended Posts

I'm the Store Manager of two retail stores (clothing). I'm on my feet for 8 hours a day. I move boxes weighing approximately 40lbs, climb ladders, disassemble and re-assemble walls using hardware. Although I can delegate a lot of these tasks, I can't count on delegating everything 100% of the time.

Also, can I use FMLA for the surgery or no?

Thanks in advance for your input!

My surgeon's instructions were not to lift anything heavier than 15 pounds for 6 weeks, so the lifting requirements alone might be a problem. I can also say that you are going to effectively be on a very low calorie diet. I'm two weeks out and just doing a little bit of walking can take a lot out of me. I'm going back to work tomorrow, but I have a desk job.

As to FMLA, this absolutely qualifies. Your surgeon's office can fill out any paperwork your employer requires.

If you were my surgeon's patient, he would suggest 8 weeks off and require 6 weeks off as a minimum.

I had heard you only need a week off of work but I don't know if this includes heavy lifting jobs. It probably requires several weeks off. I have a job where I work in the field traveling to people's home and in the office at my computer. I don't really do heavy lifting but a lot of driving and stressful situations. I think I am going to take two weeks off when I have the surgery.

I have a desk job and went back to work today (tomorrow is 3 weeks post op). Physically I'm absolutely fine, but I left early due to sheer fatigue. Being on your feet all day? You're going to need more time off than I took.

If you are lifting boxes 6-8 weeks sounds more like the norm. No less involved than a hysterectomy which my friend just had. She has a desk job and was off 8 weeks after that hysterectomy.

I was off from work for 4 weeks and I worked at home for 3 weeks before I returned to the office. You will be drained the first few weeks after surgery. I wasn't prepared for the total lack of energy. Don't rush back to work if you don"t have to.

I went back after two weeks, but I work a desk job. Re lifting, the surgeon advised not to lift anything more than a gallon of milk for 6 weeks. Yes, FMLA leave can be used.

Let me tell you, I'm two weeks post, feel great! But like a dummy I went shopping. I carried the bags in and now I'm sore in my gutt. I took pain pill, went to bed and woke up fine. Wise to rest at least keep in mind your learning a new way to eat! Don't miss this time!

My surgeon recommends taking 4 weeks off due to the restrictions on lifting 40lb boxes. I'm actually looking forward to this time off. I live very close to the beach, so I plan on soaking up some rays :-)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
