Spinning class?

Recommended Posts

I had spin class last night too! I'm actually getting used to it I think. I'm not really sore at all. But yeah different instructors do different things. Sorry your hurting so much. You'll be better by Sunday..:waytogo:

Tonight I'm off again. Getting harder to keep my kid excited about going to the YMCA with me.

I've been trying a lot of different exercises and haven't really found anything that has shown me any kind of results yet. I really want to get my legs and butt in shape and thought that spin classes could help with that. Where have ya'll seen improvements in your bodies since you started spinning?

Legs, Butt, and Arms from holding myself up!

It's definately one of the greatest workouts ever, up there with running and swimming. I've noticed that it takes me a lot longer to work up a sweat on the elliptical machine now. And it will only take about 3 classes to notice a big difference!

How long would you say to wait on attending the spinning class after surgery since it's intense? I haven't had surgery yet (Dec.) but working on planning my new schedule once I have it. The Y has it twice a week where I live. The nutritionist told me if I don't exercise I won't lose the 2lbs a week I want to lose and it's important to tone while losing. I'm so excited I wish I was being banded tomorrow!

Thundandlight,

I am no expert but I would say see how you feel after the surgery and give yourself at least two weeks. You may have to "adjust" the intensity for a few classes. Good luck with your banding and happy spinning!!

JMCAmbra,

I am glad that you are enjoying spinning and getting great results! Yet I see that you mentioned that you "hold yourself up", I don't know if the instructor tells you this but your form should be where you lightly grip the handle bars (even when you jumping and standing). Most of your weight should remain on your legs. Keep spinning! Here are a few tips for posture...

One of the more popular cardiovascular trends I’ve seen over the last few years is spinning. Like any other form of exercise, proper form and technique is essential to attain maximum results and minimize the risk of injury.

  •
Make sure the seat height and angle are adjusted to fit your size (the leg needs to be fully extended with a slight bend in the knee)
Make sure the handle bar height is adjusted properly (your torso should be fully extended and your torso almost parallel to the floor)
Make sure you are wearing proper cycling clothing. Cycling shorts (whether the fitted or less fitted kind) have a padded seat that will protect your “business” and keep you from getting too sore.
Warm up on the bicycle before any intense spinning exercise and make sure you cool down and stretch also.
A key to challenging spinning is lifting up and down out of the saddle (seat). Again, your form is important and you need to “put your brain in your butt”. When rising out of the saddle, make sure to lightly grip the handle bars, keep your neck and shoulders relaxed, keep your core engaged, and last but not least, keep your butt over the saddle making sure your knees don’t come forward (towards the handlebars).
Make sure to stay hydrated
  • Greater resistance on the bicycle along with proper form (sitting back in the seat) will burn more calories, improve cardiovascular health and reduce body fat.

Nina

Thanks, my form is pretty good, but I'm slightly top heavy, so I end up leaning some of the time. And I was noticing just from gripping the handlebars in different position my wrist and forearms look much firmer. Thanks for the tips!

Check out the spin class now, see how you like it. Starting an exercise program now may help with recovery and how quickly you can get back into that exercise program. Again, check with your surgeon, see what he/she recommends.

We do two positions while standing up. One where your up and over my trainer calls it. Leaning over the handle bars and gripping the front of them. The other ur basically just standing and just lightly touching the handle bars. Keeping a straight position is important for this one. So as far as positions go its probably varies by instructor.

Yeah, and usually in the beginning the instructor has us warm up by standing up, and basically lowering your upper body over the handlebars (think pushup), then pushing up to an almost standup position, then repeating about 10 times. It works all the little muscles because you really have to stabilize yourself.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed. I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
