How the hell do I get through this?

Recommended Posts

So, I am officially set for my RNY gastric bypass on June 6th (about damn time but YAYAY ), anyways, I just started my liquid diet about a week ago and I already feel like I cant do this for another 20 days (liquid diet for me is 28 days long). Was there any thing that anyone did that helped them get through this mentally and psychically? I feel like I'm going to fail at this . Any help?

My liquid diet was 3 weeks, I lost 40 lbs and I had three per day and a small meal at night. I had my surgery on April 29 and I am already down a total of 60lbs from April 8th when I started the diet. That seems like a very long diet, but the thing that go me through it was the end game and the benefits that come with it, the first week sucks but after the head aches and light headed-ness goes away you will be in a state of ketosis. This is where your body eats Protein and then fat reserves for fuel. Just make sure your drinking enough Water and you should do fine, also Tylenol helps in the first week. Good luck

I don't have any advice. I only have one week of it and start that in a bit over a week. I hope it improves for you.

28 days??!! Holy cow! Girl, that is tough! I only did 7 days and that was hard enough! I think I would call the dr to see if you could eat at least once per day. 28 days of liquid only is a bit extreme.

Other than that, lots of broth (Swanson's makes a Tortilla Soup broth that saved my life!), lots of sugar free popsicles, pudding and/or yogurt will help if you are allowed those. Which Protein shakes are you drinking? Make sure it is something you like that you can make thick enough to stick with you for a while.

But yea, I would call and ask the dr to be a bit less restrictive. Even one small meal idea (even if just chicken breast) would save you.

WHAT!?!?!? No way.. I'm sorry.. I couldn't have done it. That is an insane amount of time for that. I had to do it 24 hours!

My surgery is also on June 6th! I am on day three of my three week Optifast diet and the only way I can finish the shakes is to blend them with ice so they are really cold and chug them without smelling them. Once I started doing that it got easier - and I've lost 4 pounds in two days!

Good luck with your pre-op diet and surgery.

I had 10 days of pre-op liquids. I went in with the understanding that his was necessary for my next step in life. Even while my husband was grilling chicken and burgers while we entertained guests, I found I was actually okay with my Glucerna. I was sick of them after 10 days (I was having GI trouble with them that was preventing me from eating much else) but was grateful that I stuck to it completely because if they had needed to cancel.my surgery due to my liver still being too large, I would have been even more upset with myself.

I had my RNY on 27 April. I was on a liquid diet two weeks prior to the surgery. I did the following and it got me through:

Made homemade chicken broth twice a week. I sautéed carrots celery onions and jalapeño, added costco chicken base and a whole chicken and cooked it slow, added a little Sage bay salt-and-pepper and garlic powder. This makes an amazing broth, of course you have to scoop off the fat after it is chilled.

I drink 16 ounces of this for lunch and dinner and it really helped.

For Protein drinks I did I superior deluded. I also drank two Premier Protein shakes a day for a total of 60 g of Protein. Sugarfree Popsicles or my dessert. I made it!

28 days? That's insane! It's not like you're 600 pounds or something! I don't understand why you have to do this for so long! I'm so sorry girl! Just try to constantly think that you HAVE to do this for your surgery! You want your surgery to go well, so it just needs to be done! And honestly, after about a week, most of the intense hunger pains will subside. Try to stick it out for another week and you will feel less hungry.

Man, they MUST eat where you can't see them! It is beyond rude for them to eat in front of you when you are struggling with this! Tell them to eat in another room away from you, please! You need their support!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
