Anyone keep the surgery under wraps?

Recommended Posts

Hello beautiful people!!

I was wondering if any of you chose not to tell your family and friends about your WLS?

I feel this is like if I wanted to get my tubes tied because I no longer wanted to have children I wouldn't tell everyone.

Am I alone in this? If I am, for those of you who have had the surgery done are thee risks or benefits to telling ot not telling?!

Thanks!!

Hi, my surgery is booked on April 30th and like you I'm not planning on telling anyone about this except Hubby and my mum. I just don't want to hear people telling me I didn't need the surgery or asking if I tried dieting before opting for the surgery! Those are just questions that get me angry and I just want to focus on my weight loss and enjoy it. I don't want anyone to ruin it for me

Only my wife knows, and I'm booked for April 28. I may tell a few after the results show. I booked time away from the office and told a few people I was having surgery but left it at that. Nobody asked for details. If they pressed I was ready to say "it's a GI thing, let's not go into the gory details". I did tell one other person--my dermatologist who had always kept me accountable for my weight. His disapproving stare made sure I won't tell anyone else!

I agree. I only wanted my mom and husband. But my mom said she didnt want to lie for me if someone asked what she was doing. I just shake my head.

Ha ha well it was my moms idea not to tell anyone.. She too doesn't want me to hear any negative thoughts from others. She supports me with this all the way although at first I thought she would be the one to disagree.. In fact she will be traveling with me to get the surgery done since Hubby can't take time off work

Only my hubs, daughter and son-in-law know. I do not believe that I will ever share the information at all. It really isn't any bodies business what I wanted to do for myself. It has been a life time battle for me.

My surgery is the 27th. The clinic I go to wants you to have a couple support people, they want to to bring one in to the support groups too. I have told my close friends and close family members. I am sure I will have to tell others once the weight comes off and people start asking questions. I am not looking forward to telling people as it is a little embarrassing for me.

I agree, I don't feel I want to reveal this decision. I privately video my thoughts and experiences so i can look back at it all a year later. Hopefully after a year I will be pleased with my private decision.

I'm VERY pleased that I have told no one! I got an Uber home from the hospital! I've met 2 people randomly who had the surgery and kept in touch and they are a good support network. All in all the site was really all I needed. Having negative or snarky comments from people I can't get away from, for example people I work with or something like that or family, who needs it?

This topic was the primary reason why I put surgery off for so long. I'm just in the beginning stages, but the coordinator said if everything went smoothly I could be looking at a surgery date as early as June! I've only told one very close friend. I think my mom will be the hardest person to keep it from, and will be the most hurt if she finds out. I'm not one to lie, but my mother is a typical nosey Italian mom, so not only is she a gossip queen, but if I tell her I'm sure to be receiving emails with links to all things WLS [emoji849] We live in different states so we don't see each other but a couple times a year. Still haven't decided what to do.

Great idea on the video log. I am also only telling supportive peeps and "need to know" basis. It's a deeply private matter and most people will not take the time to do the exhaustive research (and failed attempts) that we do to arrive here.

I'm weird...originally I didn't want to tell anyone, but during the process, I found myself telling people anyway. Most of the people I've told, though, are my colleagues, who are medical professionals, so they've been supportive. My family, on the other hand, I didn't really want to tell. I wasn't even going to tell my 91 y.o. grandmother that lives with me...mainly because I didn't want her to worry, but my mil blabbed . So, I get the decision to keep it private! Whatever works for you! Take care!!

The only people that know that I will be doing VSG are my husband, my mom, dad and sister. Thankfully, my parents and sister support my decision and agree with me to keep this between us. My mom is my biggest cheerleader and she even wants me to stay with her the first week so she can help me. I'm having a hard time getting my husband on board. He doesn't understand why can't I just do it the nonsurgical way. Hopefully I get him on board by the time my surgery date approaches. At the end of the day, I have to do this for myself. I must say, if I didn't have support, I probably wouldn't have gone through with this. With that said, tell at least one person. Support is needed during this journey.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
