Why do ppl tell me I don't need surgery?

Recommended Posts

I think people say it because they don't know what else to say. I was at a job interview recently and my prospective boss said something about how she was saving money to have a breast lift and Botox. She looked great to me, but I didn't want to be unsupportive and nay-say her choices. On the other hand, I wasn't sure if she was looking for a compliment and wanted me to say "you're kidding!! You're gorgeous!" Since I was on the spot, I said "that's great. Everyone ought to do whatever they want to look however they want. But if I looked as great as you, I might wait till it was really necessary." I work in the beauty industry, so I don't know what the right answer was. I never heard from her again and assume I didn't get the job. It's tricky.

On the other hand, during my 6 month preop diet I had to meet monthly with my NUT and have three visit with a Dr of nutrition. At my first appt with that Dr, she came out to waiting room a couple time looked around and went back. Finally she came back out and asked receptionist where I had gone. I didn't know she was looking for me as she didn't call a name. The receptionist pointed me out. The doctor greeted me and apologized for the wait because she said she was looking for a bariatric patient and I didn't look like one. I was a little concerned but she opened my chart and said that I certainly meet the criteria, I just carry my weight well (which I think is maybe true).

When ppl find out I am getting VSG they say "if you can lose wt for the surgery then why can't you just keep on doing that?" I am practaly starving myself and ppl just say "keep on doing that"

I tell them. I can't starve myself for the rest of my life. And I have been doing this YoYo for >10y.

I know...it's frustrating to hear that because want them to support you.especially when you're already feeling pretty scared about the surgery and you just need good energy

I think most of the time they are just trying to be nice by saying you don't need it. It's rare that you will say you're having WLS and someone says "well it's about time fatty". That wouldn't be very nice.

Lol..right

When I went for my pre-op EKG at the hospital, the technician told me that I did not need to lose weight. (really???at 5'2, 235 pounds, post-stroke with collapsing spine????)

I told her that she should call the surgeon right away and tell him that she disagrees with his diagnosis. I sent a letter to her supervisor copied to the hospital administration. When the Press-Ganey survey came to my door, I said all of the good things that I could, but mentioned her by name and how I did not think that she should be diagnosing the patients that are sent her way. Geeze Louize.

I wonder if you may have overreacted to someone who just didn't know what else to say, maybe even thought they were giving you a compliment and now their job could possibly be on the line.

My surgery is to be on April 28th. Only 2 ppl know about it...my husband and my sister. I want to talk to my mom, but she and my MIL are the biggest gossips. And I just don't really relate to my mom very well.

I've had my own misgivings about the decision to have surgery and completely change my eating habits. But 2 of the main reasons I've decided this is what I need is this.....1. I'm sick and tired of being hungry. I'm 43 and I don't remember a day or an hour in my life that I didn't feel hunger pains. And 2. The fact that "cheating" on this new diet could potentially cause me immediate great pain, etc is a much better motivator than anything else I've come up with.

To many ppl sit in judgment of things they just don't understand. Dont allow their ignorance to road block your progress.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
