Feel like I'm starving!

Recommended Posts

Hello all.I'm brand new to the forum and from what I see I'll love it.the question I have is I'm 6 days post op and I feel like wanting to eat everything in sight,I'm getting a bottle and a half of liquids in a day so far and almost two Protein Shakes, it just feels like I'm starving all the time,I was sleeved, the first few days I didn't want nothing but now it's the opposite. Will this pass thanks for any info.

It gets better. In the meantime, have some more Protein shakes. I found warm chicken broth to be soothing and filling for a while too. Then I graduated to cream Soups with the chunks strained out. Follow your doctor's guidelines for that. But rest assured, the constant hunger should get better soon. Good luck!

When you say that you "feel like you are starving" what are you actually, physically feeling? If it's rumbling or gurgling in your stomach, it is more likely acid than hunger. If it's not a physical sensation, then it is most likely head hunger. Every single food commercial was doing that to me in the early days post-op, even though I knew there was no physical way I could actually eat any of those foods at the time.

I'm guessing more head hunger then anything it seems like this surgery is 99% mental then anything else.I guess part of me is a little surprised that I got my appetite back so soon after surgery.

As they say, they perform surgery on your stomach, not your brain. It's crazy that even though eating a slice of pizza would have literally put me in the hospital, every single time I saw a commercial for pizza in those early days, I DESPERATELY wanted one! It takes a while for your brain to catch onto your physical limitations, but it does happen eventually.

I thought that you are suppose to lose the feeling of hunger due to them taking 85% of your stomach out including grelin(spelling) that is what makes you hungry. im going to look that up again. hang in there.

Physical hunger, yes. Head hunger, no. When you see a commercial for delicious-looking food and it triggers a craving for that food, that has NOTHING to do with physical hunger. That's all in your brain. Surgery does nothing to change that.

You should be starting the puree stage very shortly, it gets much easier with each stage.

Hang in there, you are doing a great job.

As already mentioned, make sure the hunger feelings isn't really due to stomach acid.

It definitely gets better. I remember in the few days after surgery being totally annoyed at how many food commercials there were. Everything made me think of food, and thinking of food made me totally convinced I was starving. For me it was more head or emotional hunger than anything. Hang in there! Get in your Protein as you are able and that feeling will go away.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
