I had my surgery on February 16, 2016. I'm a little lost on what I can and can not eat at this point. I started this journey at 243lbs at 5'6 and I was down 20lbs at first weigh in.

I'm so happy I made this life changing decisions because I had to get healthy for myself and for my kids who are 10 and 3. I'm a handicapped mom with a supportive husband and I'm very lucky for that. I'd love to hear your experiences and how much weight should I expect to lose and in what time frame? Also maybe share some recipes with me? Your daily intake? I'm from New Jersey and would love a pal to have contact with please.

Well, I wanted to update you. Last week was a hard one, my very best friend suddenly passed away. Besides being totally lost and confused my first inclination was to just eat anything I wanted to. My stress reliever. But then I thought about my friend Pat and knew she would not want me to do that. She and my husband along with other friends have been super supportive and in my own way I didn't want to let her down. Sound weird? I am handicapped and Pat and my husband always said we are all going to ride bikes one day, Pat was heavy but not to the degree I was. So, I got past the urge to just stuff my face and stay on track. On weigh in day at my house I actually lost 5 more pounds. I was sooo happy. Still long way to go but each little step forward is a victory. How are you doing? Things going well I hope. Please keep me posted on you.

I am so sorry about your loss but I'm so happy to hear that you didn't give in and just eat the pain away. It's so hard to stay on track when there is always so many bumps in the road. I have my 2nd doctors appt the first week in April but I keep feeling like either I'm eating too much or I'm just not losing. Don't know as I don't weigh myself at home. All I can think about is "am I losing weight or am I eating too much"! It's a horrible cycle! Lol

So sorry things are crazy we are organizing a memorial for my best friend Pat. Her family is doing nothing which just bugs me out of this world. I don't blame this on Pat's passing but boy there are some days when I am starving all day. Then I worry I have stretched my stomach out or something. All I do is worry about it and the more I worry the more anxiety I get about the diet.

If you were eating too much it most likely would come back up. Mine did and after that I really watched myself. I can tell if I am pushing it, my chest starts to feel full, like it is backing up from my stomach? Might not be possible but it gets me to stop. Sorry about being gross. I believe you are losing weight. I still do the same thing every time I go to my surgeon or my regular doctor but, so far, I have lost, maybe not a lot but anything helps. I really bet you have lost, you just can't see it right away but it will be very noticeable soon. I was much, much heavier than you and it took me awhile to see it because I was really heavy and I am not kidding. VERY HEAVY. Very embarrassing for me. My husband never said a word about it. You are doing it I know. Hope to hear from you. Keep up the good work. Again sorry about being away.

I'm actually having trouble getting all my Protein and Water in. I have been drinking more coffee than usual but that's because I don't want to eat. I don't know if I'm doing it right as my crappy $7 scale said I put in 10lbs last night.

I know it is really hard to go with lo cal Snacks. You go to coffee I go to Decaf tea. Not allowed anything carbonated forever, I also drink fruit flavored Water. Peach is the best. But I love peaches. I'm so sorry you were worried about me, but thank you for thinking of me. My scale has been wrong plenty of times. There is no way you could be gaining. Do you drink Protein shakes? The one my surgeon has me on pretty much fills me and has 30gm of Protein. And it's chocolate and doesn't taste like God knows what, If I drink one really cold and slow it will fend off the hunger for awhile. I have researched foods I can have for a snack at 100 cal or under and I try to go with those. But, I am not going to lie there are days nothing helps...I just get crabby cause I am hungry and then I look at the pic of me before I started this on my fridge and it brings me right back to reality. I can't stress how big I was, It was morbid. I am betting you are doing great, you just need to look into fill in foods with Protein that will help you get all your protein plus help fill you up. Did this help at all? I hope I am not rambling or boring you. Thanks again for thinking of me.

Not rambling at all lol! What Protein shakes do you use? I use baritrack chocolate bliss and it's 20 grams of Protein. I try to drink at least one a day but most days I can't stomach it.

Mine are Premier Protein I buy them at Sam's. Do you have Sam's where you are? I actually look forward to them. They taste like chocolate milk. They also have vanilla, & vanilla strawberry. I have to have 1 a day but if I get really hungry I have 1 or 2 more. It's a good amount of Protein. I get a 12 pack for about $14,

I do have SAMs and costco. I have to get a membership so that I can get that. Also do you eat the Protein bars?

I have never tried their's, not sure why. I do eat Special K Bars. chocolate on the bottom, granola on top of that and then I get the chocolate chip ones but they cost me 170 cal. But if I remember right they have a good amount of Protein in them. I really need to try the Premier Protein Bars, can't believe I haven't. Tried Quest, it was like eating sand, it was awful. I really liked the Nature Valley honey & Oats before surgery. Also, Fiber One Brownies 90 cal. some fiber. Wal Mart also carries the shakes if you want to try a small pack first. The colder the better. Sometimes I almost freeze them and then eat them like ice cream.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
