I guess it's time for me to take another break for a while.

Im sorry Babs, i seem to start stuff it seems. Maybe i should be the one to step away for awhile. you are too important here.

Alcoholism is not uncommon after WLS. Because of the surgery alcohol gets absorbed a lot quicker and gets into you blood stream at high concentrations. Most surgeons suggest skipping it all together after surgery some say small amounts after the first year.

Since I don't enjoy alcohol now I can only hope it stays that way, but I would surely try to avoid it for 6months or more just so my stomach would heal.

im coming from the perspective of the daughter of two addicts liking to go over board one weekend is not addiction drinking 10-12 drinks every day and not paying bills because you spent it on booze is addiction. so yeah lets be careful about how we sling that word

I believe you make a great point and there have been some other good ones raised in this thread.

We really do have to proceed with caution....heads on swivels, indeed.

Lots of pitfalls out there.

You'll get things sorted out and I respect the move you are making. Always wise to remain in control of such things.

ALCOHOL BEWARE INDEED?

To have a few enjoyable alcoholic beverages [even daily] is not being addicted to anything.

It is an acquired habit just like some have in overeating, smoking, sex? etc. & can be broken with will or just say NO POWER, if required.

ALTHOUGH it has been correctly mentioned that alcohol is absorbed more quickly into a sleevers bloodstream, it HAS NOT been pointed out that whether one feels any intoxication or not they will be DUI DWI etc. after drinking much less alcohol than those not sleeved.

In other words 2 drinks in an hour & you can easily get busted, become involved in an accident & lose your insurance coverage. Don't learn the hard way, BE VERY CAREFUL & understand this aspect well!

As is often stated, we are all different:

This is how I handle alcohol @ home or out visiting or dining....

Drink whatever, until time to eat, then stop.

Eating slowly straight away, is no problem [volume/size up to about 1.5 to 2 cups].

Eating out, I will often only order a starter [if really small X 2] or Soup or Caesar salad

After eating & about about 0.5 hour, I can then handle a small dessert or ice cream etc.

More often than not, I don't drink anymore.

Your satiation/fullness with food should be quite apparent.

Get used to it, as that is when one should leave anything left on their plate!

If there is more than needed or way too much, leave it...they will learn.

As this satiated feeling diminishes [or when it wears off after about 1-1.5 hours] one could drink more should they wish.

Friends don't keep pestering/cajoling me to either eat or drink more, as they did initially.

It does seem like you're irritated by a lot of people's issues on here lately...

I'm of the opinion that any response is fine as long as it's delivered in a constructive and respectful way. I don't think calling people "immature" for their honest thoughts and experiences is okay. People make mistakes, no one is perfect. And we are entitled to our choices!!

Most of us here on BP are going through a life changing experience. It's an emotional roller coaster and I hope, at the very least, we can try to keep things kind and not judge.

I used to love to drink, freaking loved it. But now it's too much trouble to drink. I can't tolerate carbonated beverages so mixed drinks/beer is out. mixed drinks with juices are out unless very watered down juice because sugar gives me bad headaches. Shots I can do but it burns the hell out of my little tummy. I think if you can drink and have fun then do it! If you can't anymore then that's fine too! Don't judge someone because they sin differently than you. We all got our struggles, be a support not a hindrance.

Apparently I don't know what the word addiction means.

Healthy eating?

If I go horseback riding regularly, or work out, am I addicted?

I understood addiction to be more a be behavior that causes problems in a person's life, creates problems with relationships, work, and risks physical/financial/ emotional health. So if I was a skydiving instructor, surely I would do it frequently and it would not interfere with but rather support my chosen lifestyle.

Btw, I didn't Google this, just my understanding of addiction.

My dad and I were just talking about this because I have started drinking quite a lot recently and I said every single person after weight-loss surgery Ends up getting another addiction. Drinking, sex, shopping, pills, cross fit. A glass of wine I could not drink. Too sweet but a whole bottle of vodka.... Not an issue.... Well ok an issue lol

I would not agree to the "every single person...ends up getting another addiction". Just because "never" and "always" are words to be wary of.

It doesn't have to be a bad addiction people get addicted to bicycling and skydiving and eating healthy and other aspects of life being addicted to something is not always a bad thing... Although I like really hate CrossFit Fanatics lol

I can't tolerate carbonated beverages so mixed drinks/beer is out.

Diet pop & mixed drinks become considerably less carbonated if one shakes the can & in the sink carefully cracks the top enough to let the gas out [doesn't squirt everywhere] then open fully, slowly.

I do the same with beer & dry cider [my preferred drink], then pour over heaps of ice into a pint mug.

Let the drink settle down as more gas makes it's way out, then top up.

The only beer I can drink @ a pub without doing this, are the English lightly nitrogen gassed types like Kilkenny, Boddington's etc.

Yes I drink beer over ice [just like we did in ASIA] & it is good....plus 1/2 your drink is actually ice/water.

Give it a go & experiment with pop until it's mastered, Daveo.

Yeah I have a pouch not a sleeve so I can't even look in the general direction of carbonation I took a sip of club soda and just about died

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
