exercise after surgery, what did you start with?

Couch to 5k. It builds walk/run intervals very slowly.

How soon after surgery did you start running? I used to run 5ks and am planning on running my first half in March and I'd like to start training asap.

I had never run before surgery and started couch to 5k at about three or four weeks out. I had surgery in early December, did my first 5k in April, 10k in August and half marathon in October.

So you had surgery 12/16 and are planning a half marathon at about four months out? How much did you run before surgery? You said you used to run 5k's, how long ago? That seems super fast to me, but if you have been a runner for a while it might be possible. I was only getting about 400-500 calories a day at four months out so no way could I have done that!

Swimming, it's my go to exercise because it's low impact which is great for my back. I'm 5 weeks today and I can't wait to get into the gym to do some weight training

InnerSurferGirl-you are brave! I cannot imagine getting in a pool. I do promise to think about it after my surgery and contemplate maybe after 4 months. ...maybe. Boy, talk about a comfort zone issue for me! You rock!!

You can do it. I can't tell you how much getting into the pool helps me: body, mind and soul.

Also, since I am swimming at a wellness center that is associated with a hospital and serves a lot of folks undergoing physical rehab, the encouragement is awesome.

I too am a Water rat. I have all the grace of a sheet of plywood in a hurricane when walking and running. I can do it... but it just feels 17 kinds of clumsy and just plain hurts everything I've got in a very short period of time.

I was straight out walking the dogs a few days after surgery. 10 weeks out I average about 4-5 miles a day between the dogs and general walking. The dogs legs appear to be getting shorter-wonder why?!!!! Off to the pool after the New Year (I might get some more 'me' time) to start swimming again. I feel brilliant. Went out on Boxing Day with friend, husband and dogs and husband fell about laughing when I headed towards the kids adventure area and started playing. He gave me a huge kiss and said that the difference was amazing. I'm 59 by the way but don't feel it anymore!!!!!

Walking, walking, and more walking. I was sleeved 28 days ago and have been averaging 3-5 miles everyday. It really makes me feel better and I'm already down 29 pounds.

Walking up to 2 miles the 1st six weeks then I continued with my Curves membership...6 months out doing 4 days at Curves and walk 6-8 miles on the weekend.

I am currently using DVDs by Leslie Sancone. She has a Walk At Home series. It does include alot of walking, but it also incorporates other elements as well. I starting using this about a week and a half after surgery.

I started with walking also. I increased my daily Fitbit goals as I was feeling better. I also started riding my recumbent bike. I found that easy to do and watch tv when I was too tired to keep walking some nights. I was just given the ok to start in the Water at my 4 week PO visit. Once all my scabs fell off, I got the ok and am looking for a class to join and hope to add lap swimming in the near future.

I am trying to grasp at what magnitude I should begin with in exercise. I don't know if I should just begin with walking or...? Any advice on your work out routines after surgery would be great!

Surgery was Nov 30th. I started back at the gym on Jan 19th. Try the recumbent bike ( you sit and pedal your knees are kind of stretched out in front of you) it works out your core muscles

(belly) ... your legs and your but with a low pain possibility. It is very good for someone with back knee and hip issues ( like me) I don't know if you have them but if you are just starting and need advice this is where I started before I ever had my surgery... IT works I got stronger my knees back everything got better and even before surgery etc I lost 26 pounds. I am also back to lifting weights... Doc said if I tolerated it to go for it... as long as I don't do too much tummy stuff ( I get enough from the bike right now) It's good :)

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
