I Am Thankful For My Stall

Recommended Posts

As you may have noticed, I respond to a lot of posts with Embrace the Stall!

http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

I got tired of responding to the same posts multiple times a day and so wrote one long post with the information I have gathered and what works for me and others as it relates to stalls.

I don't see the need for educating people about stalls to lessen anytime soon, but I would like to hear from YOU some of the good things that happened while you were in a stall.

I'll start.

I am grateful that during my last stall, I: dropped a bathing suit size; increased my lap swimming to 1 hour, several times a week and have gotten faster and stronger; am able to get in and out of my car more easily; and no longer need a seatbelt extender.

How about you?

Stalls definitely make me reevaluate how well I'm following the plan and how I can do even better. I'm thankful for that. I'm determined to focus on the plan instead of taking on other unhealthy measures to make the scale move.

Being thankful for stalls still might require what one might call "graduate level gratitude." haha

I had no idea that people lose more inches during a stall, btw!

I'm going in to my 2nd month of a stall. I am not worried, freaked, or scared. I know I will eventually "whoosh".

I am thankful that while in a stall I tried on a shirt that hadn't fit me three weeks ago. Today it fits perfectly!

It doesn't apply to me now, @@Inner Surfer Girl, but I do think your philosophy is right up there with the greats of the 18th Century. I always told people to keep doing the work and it would all catch up down the line.

LOL -- is that a polite way of saying I'm old-fashioned? I'll take it.

I have learned to appreciate the stall mostly because when it ends the weight starts coming off fast again!

And it's weird but I swear my body composition changes and it's more noticeable.

Great thread!

I actually haven't experienced a stall yet....

But I MIGHT appreciate it - if and when it happens!

And if I don't, then I'll come back to this thread :)

No way, young'un. It is a way of saying you are a brilliant, independent, innovative thinker. Gunness, how would you have reacted had I likened you to the Greek philosophers? Stoically?

Pretty much already covered above why I was thankful for my many stalls, but can I just say I'm thankful to @@Inner Surfer Girl for always being such an inspiration to so many of us?

You are very welcome.

A lot of years of pain, struggle, therapy, and recovery went into preparing me for this stage of my life. If I can share a little bit of what I have learned, it makes it worth it.

Thank you, too @@Babbs for your wisdom, experience, and sense of humor (among other good qualities).

So I have a slightly different perspective on "stalls" I honestly don't believe there is such a thing. I know you're thinking I'm crazy but really a stall is when everything stops right, the scale, the inches, feeling better etc.? As others have said during their "stall" they noticed inches being lost resulting in smaller sizes, more mobility, an overall improvement in their health etc. Of course there are times when the # on the scale doesn't budge for a period of time but this isn't a stall this is just your body catching up to itself and other things are happening "behind the scenes". Sure it can be discouraging when the # on the scale doesn't move in the right direction but trust me if you're sticking to your healthy eating and exercise habits then you're losing inches, improving your overall health and eventually that scale has no choice but to start moving!!!!

I agree. The "stall" is when our bodies are doing the work of becoming smaller: dismantling and moving around the structure that supports our weight.

Embrace the Stall!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
