The fear of regain is REAL!

I too have a huge fear of re gaining. I am very strict (some say I am too skinny). I am 5'9 and weigh 125. I do did into the "up underweight BMI category. But I didn't feel that skinny. I have a five pound bounce range that I allow myself. I have a friend that had the surgery a month ago and eats Cheetos and little Debbie chocolate wafers. It is scary. I have been maintaining for 6 months. Went from 289 to 125 in about 8 months. I know I can do it. I just wish I was a skinny person that could eat what I want and not gain like some people were born to do. :)

5'9" 125 is beyond thin, thats highly dangerous. i could go on, but its not neccessary.

This is scary as someone just operated on. I really want to do it but fear is so real. I hope I can. It's quite scary! I hope I have the tenacity you have @"Elode".

I used to think the same thing. How is it physically possible to eat enough to gain weight!?

Here's an example. I'm 15 months out, and for the first time since I've been sleeved, I've been having some personal family issues, and although I am usually tried and true and stick to my plan 90% of the time, the stress got to me and I wanted to EAT. Yeah, I know. Old habits die hard.

Anyways, I went to this deli. It had a sandwich called "The Gobbler". Thanksgiving dinner in a sandwich. You know, the works...stuffing, turkey, cranberry, mayo. Yummo. I even did the responsible thing and looked up the calories....750. I don't even want to know the carb count. So what's a bariatric patient to do? Order it, of course!

I ate a quarter of it. I was so full!

Then I ate a quarter more a little later. Then another quarter. By days end, I had eaten the whole sandwich. All 750 calories and a gazillion carbs.

That's the kind of stuff that will become habit if you don't watch it. And by "watch it" I mean really get to the core of why I want to grab the first comfort food as soon as things go wrong in my life. It's a work in progress. I'll get there :)

@@Babbs Oh it can happen so easily! I could literally eat an entire bag of Cheetos In a day if I wanted. They dissolve and don't take up mush room in the stomach. I wouldn't but I could. I still have massive restriction which as really helped me. Regular foods like chicken, crabs meat, steak ect...fill me up fast with a small amount. It's the junk food that goes down so easily. I have to stay away from things like that!

@@Stevehud Technically depending on whether Miller is a male/female (no information given on gender) If Miller is in fact a female she is still within normal limits. The very tip of normal range but still normal so she's not dangerously thin. Courtesy of the CDC.

Since it was said by a female, wouldn't the better choice of a tree be the "pussy willow"?

My friend had it about a year and a half ago. She hasn't gained, I don't think, but she's been stalled for a long time. But I see the same thing -the FB recipes she makes, the rich coffee she's drinking, etc. Although I didn't want to hear about people who failed at first, I do think it's a good reminder to not waste this gift we've been given.

I'm also terrified to regain weight. One has to be careful with this fear. It keeps me on track and honest for the most part but it is also exhausting to do afraid of it after awhile.

I've ended up underweight because I'm too scared to up my calories. It's easy to slip into black and white thinking.

At some point one as to come off of a diet- you just can't diet forever! Trusting in your body and allowing for some wiggle room in the diet.

I think people regain weight for one of two reasons. A lack of commitment to change in the first place and not really liking being thinner OR such dramatic dieting that eventually they can't handle it anymore and begin to overeat instead.

I think the key to maintainence long term is moderation and Portion Control combined with mindful eating, and the occasional check to make sure things are still on track. Being more relaxed and allowing some fun foods and not having to count every bite each day.

I wish I could get there myself.

I think that's the key to maintenance too, Bella. I believe you will get there. You just have to practice.

I have a friend on another WLS forum who's discovered she needs over 2,000 calories a day to stop losing weight and to maintain. She's asked for advice about what foods to eat. Suggestions include that she eat in moderation: nuts, whole milk, sweet and white potatoes (but not fried), whole grain brown rice, high-fiber breads, whole grain Pasta with meats, a few treats (dark chocolate), and more.

I'm not a fan of eating fast food or junk food or sliders to get calories up. But there is a much larger variety of healthy foods out there we can eat in maintenance than those we concentrated on during our weight loss phases.

Maintenance deserves a LOT of focus and concentration. Frankly, maintaining our weight is why we worked so hard to lose the weight. This is the real game we came to play.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
