So I was supposed to have my sleeve surgery on October 27 and they day before it was cancelled. :(

My pre-op blood work showed my triglycerides at 1100, which is VERY high. My PCP signed off on it as my other numbers were fine. They surgeon even said that. However, they said even though the PCP cleared me the surgeon wants the triglycerides to around 300 before he will do the surgery.

My PCP and all those around me are mad that it was cancelled the day before for something the surgery will help fix.

Can anyone tell me what the concern was? The surgeons office didn't say much. He is a well respected surgeon in an office that people travel from around the country to see.

I know the healthier I am the better things will go, but it has been a soul crushing experience.

I am SO confused. Do I need to look at a different surgeon? Or should this boost my confidence in him since he wants me to be healthier?

Honestly, the first thing I would do is ask for repeat bloodwork just in case there was a lb error. With results so far outside the norm it's reasonable to do that.

I'm a bit surprised your PCP didn't pick up the phone and call the surgeon and have a chat with him.

The 1100 was the repeat number. My PCP was out of the office when it all happened and so another doctor in his office handled it all. They are the ones who wrote the clearance letter and stated why they felt I should be allowed to have it.

high triglycerides can increase chance of heart attack or stroke... it sounds like the surgeon wanted to make sure that you have the best possible chance for good surgical outcomes and lowered chance of complications. surgery already comes with so many risks...

I don't think surgeons WANT to cancel surgeries, that just costs them money, clients and time.

It's my opinion that the doctor is looking out for you AND for him/herself. If you were to suffer from a heart attack or stroke on the table, that would be horrific for you, your family and for the surgeon's practice. In the day and age of malpractice suits, doctors need to look at all possible outcomes and weigh the risks/benefits for the good of all involved.

I go next week for another blood draw to see if my numbers are in the range they want them in. Then hopefully they will reschedule. I figure it won't happen until 2016.

Went ahead and scheduled my blood draw for tomorrow morning. That way its not hanging over my head during Thanksgiving and shopping.

Sorry for your disappointment.

Those Triglycerides are very high, are you taking any meds to help lower them? They should fall between 0 - 149. Mine were 289 a few months ago.

My PCP has put me on 2 meds and I have continued on a modified form of the pre-op diet I was on. I started all this on 10/26. He wants to see what kind of progress we are making since triglycerides are highly influenced by diet and can change significantly in 1-3 months. I assume I will have monthly blood draws until they are low enough for surgery. According to my surgeons office he wants them around 300 before he will do it.

PCP has me on 2 meds - continued on a modified form of pre-op diet

@@LadiSani

sounds like you have a good doc

he wants to make sure all is well before surgery

some docs "might" not be as cautious

despite the postponement

things will go better for doc

and in the long run more success and health for you too

that's what counts

this year seems like it has passed so quickly

almost thanksgiving, then christmas

before you know it "hello 2016"

surgery coming up then

little patience on your part is great

kudos

good luck

Whatever you do FAST FOR THE LAB WORK!!

In the hospital when a patient is going to have cholesterol etc drawn in the AM we tell them nothing by mouth except for Water from after dinner the night before until labs are drawn.

So after dinner tonight nothing except Water until after labs are drawn. It will help you get an accurate result.

Eating anything can make it artificially high.

Good luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
