Did anybody get surgery only letting minimal people know?

Recommended Posts

I fall into the 'extremely private group'...My husband, and 1 of my 2 children (the one still attending college & living @ home) are the only people that know. When I think about anyone @ work knowing, I cringe...I'm just "THAT private". To me, sharing personal health information with anyone seems to be asking for unwanted gossip, drama...and this is such a personal, intimate, life-altering decision for me, that I don't consider it to be something I care to broadcast..The positive changes and health benefits will be MY well-deserved outcome...The masses don't need to know about my personal choices--they aren't paying my insurance or bills...so it is my choice as to who knows.

I have told my boyfriend and my sister. Sister told our mom and a mutual friend. No one has really said anything about it to me though.

I'm 3 months post op and only 3 people know about my surgery. I plan to keep it private, it's no one else's business.

I've only told my husband, and I don't plan on telling anyone else.

My sister and did it together, and we told our mom, and my husband. As another responder said, we are part of the EXTREMELY PRIVATE group. We've always been that way with every aspect of our lives! That has also meant that we don't feel obligated to give explanations to others about anything; least of all our WLS. Be it faimly, friends, or co-workers! We have a huge family where everyone always seems to be in everyone else's business, so we've had plenty of practice handling nosey people. We don't give others' interest a second thought. Heck, we don't give them a first thought, so no chance in getting to a second! I've read many posts where others find that difficult, and honestly, I can't relate!

My recommendation is to keep it a secret for now. This will give you the opportunity to step back, and determine how you want to proceed. If you determine later that you don't mind others knowing, then you've lost nothing. On the other hand, if you tell others, and decide you don't want them knowing, you can't "un-tell" it! Your decision is just that, YOUR decision! Don't tell others simply out of obligation, or because you are trying to appease them and their comfort level! You may be perfectly ok telling everyone; there are many people here that took (and will take that approach). Whatever you decide, make sure it's what's best for you!

Good luck on your journey!

I'm keeping it to myself except for my immediate family. A best friend of mine had surgery and she was placed under a magnifying glass with every food she put in her mouth and why arent you thin yet? A whole lot of comments she really didn't need that put her under extreme pressure.

I have told only my immediate family (3 sons and husband) and the people in my small group from church and two close friends. My extended family lives 8 hours away so they are not nearby to know I was missing in action for a couple of days and have been losing weight. Before surgery I didn't want the people that knew horror stories to tell them to me and have those in my head. Now I am just not sure how long term I will handle it. Still thinking....

I personally don't care who knows! I am 'owning' my decision and have been surprised that so many people have been super supportive. One or two have given me a disapproving look. But who cares? What is right for one person may not bee for another. I need the extra 'kick in the butt' that surgery will provide. Drastic? Perhaps. But I'm not looking back.

I only told my immediate family, and a couple of close friends. I made the decision upfront and it had nothing to do with embarrassment. I'm a private person and my business is my business. That was the only criteria I based it upon.

I'm now 15 weeks post op and I have no regrets. There is no right or wrong in relation to whether you tell or not tell. It should be tailored solely to fit your personal comfort zone.

Best of luck!

@@lovelylala I told 3 of my good friends, and they all live out of state. One of them came and was here with me for surgery. No one else knows, and I plan on keeping it that way.

I have known other people that had surgery and they can be at gatherings and parties and people will ask them about their surgery and what they are eating and all kinds of stuff. 5 years from now I don't want to be stuck answering stupid questions in public from people that feel like they are entitled to your life.

Now that I am almost 4 months out I am really happy I made the decision to keep it quiet. At this point I function just like a normal person with a smaller appetite.

So far only my mom and therapist know my plans to do the surgery. I recently mentioned it to my best friend and her response was "you don't need that! You're not big enough!" (My bmi begs to differ!)

I haven't told my boyfriend yet and am really stressing about that. We met when I was thin and he's seen me fluctuate over the years, but I still think he sees me as I looked when we first met, and I'm afraid he might view me differently. I know I need to tell him and I will.

Finally, I don't plan on telling anyone at work, which is causing me to rack my brain to figure out when to schedule it and how to take time off if needed (I'm a teacher and am praying that I can do it over a vacation week)!

I'm pretty much just echoing everyone else, but I only told a select few people. My husband, parents, and sister were the only ones who knew before surgery. I've told a few other friends and family members since, but otherwise I just keep it to myself.

Remember that you can always tell more people down the road if you choose, but you can't ever un-tell :) So choose wisely!

Yes! I had surgery over 2 years ago and my family knows, and then only a handful of close friends who I chose to tell. Others may suspect it. I don't know. But I didn't feel an obligation to tell anyone other than my immediate family. I mean, I'm sure my friends and co-workers don't tell me everything about their medical history, so I don't feel compelled to either. :-)

The only people who know are my husband and my three children (2 teenagers and one adult). I am losing weight at a slow enogh pace so that friends and acquantainces are not suspicious. I work from home so none of my co- workers have ever met me--- so no problems there. The most challenging people to evade will be my snooping, snivelling in- laws! Since i will be hosting Thanksgiving this year, it will be hard to hide my eating habits. I have already cleared my pantry of Protein Shakes and powder,

I'm having a tough time with this. When I first decided, I was thinking that I'd eventually be open about it, but decided to keep it on a need-to-know basis for the time being.

"Need to know" turned out to be my wife (of course) and family with whom I had events scheduled that would not have been able to cancel without hurting them.

Unfortunately, my mother is 92 and she forgets that it's a secret. She also is full of old school misinformation about WLS (it doesn't work, the surgery is a magic trick and I don't have to do anything else). I know that's she's told three people and probably more.

Meanwhile, I haven't been telling any of my close friends and I'm afraid they'll find out from someone my mother told and be upset that I didn't tell them!

My "story" has been evolving...

1. My BMI was in the high 30's and I carried it well, so people didn't consider me obese (I think).

2. I have been dropping weight very fast (57 pounds since August) and people are blown away.

3. I have been holed up in a remote vacation home and avoiding social activity for 3 months, but now I'm back in a very social community; I think people will notice that I'm only eating 4 ounces of food.

4. My current thinking is to respond to people who ask me "how are you doing it?" with:

- I discovered I had diabetes in the summer (true)

- My primary care doctor wanted to go down the diabetes treatment path (true)

- Instead, I entered a physician supervised medical Weight Loss Program (true)

- I have been an A+ patient (true)

This way, I can always concede that a surgical procedure was part of the program - if I feel the need.

Why would I feel the need?

I have a lot of close friends who would benefit from a VSG and I'd like to help them find this path...

I wish I hadn't told anyone!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
