My work is considering paying for employees to have gym memberships!

I hope they do and they do it at the YMCA. I want to swim and do the classes.

I do both.

I am an all-club member of 24-hour Fitness (indoor pools and working out while traveling = happy me) and I have equipment at home. I have a Total Gym, an elliptical machine, a standing leg machine that I am test-driving, and a balance ball with DVDs.

In Vegas, it's too damn hot to do stuff outside most days, and sometimes I just don't feel like going to the gym. My current schedule means I have to go at prime time, and fighting for a spot is just frustrating.

So, I have it set up at home, where I allow no excuses. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I like movies; working out while catching up on new releases via Netflix keeps me moving at least an hour a day, if not more.

All this time later since this thread began and I"m still working out at home. Tried the gym twice, as I really do like it, but the time factor got me again. It just works for me to be able to work out when I have half an hour, be it 6 am or 11 pm. And running is what I really love.

The MINUTE we can afford to move house we're buying one with a huge rumpus room, and we're having a complete home gym.

Hey there, Cerrin.

This is encouraging!! You might also look into your insurance paying for the gym as mine not only gives a discount to the YMCA, it also reimburses up to $500 a year in addition....so if your work won't pay for the YMCA, don't let it deter you from joining! I take it you finally found a bathing suit if you intend to swim...:tt1:

OH I have plenty of swim suits. lol I need to buy a smaller one now. But it works.

How did you find out your insurance reimburses for the gym?

Call your insurance company directly or look at their website. I've called the customer service number. Ask about "Fitness reimbursement". As I said before, some also have lower rates if you show your insurance card at sign up. Ask about waiving membership fees, too. I know with the YMCA there's a sign up fee, usually about $100, but it can be waived if you had a membership with them before. They're not out to make money as the bigger gyms are, so don't hesitate to ask about specials and stuff.... I know I've been allowed lower rates with Harvard Pilgrim, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Tufts in the past....can't hurt to ask! :tt1:

I tried the gym, but never felt as if I belonged there. I have an exercise bike (eBay £26), a 15 year old cycle and some exercise videos. My outlay on kit is about one month's gym subscription.

Now I've met my targets, the exercise will go to one day on, one day off. Even better reason to be a home exerciser.

We bought a treadmill and my husband and I both go on it daily. Also use 5lb hand weights routine. I can watch my shows at night without an interruptions... it has worked out well so far. I can see at some point wanting to join a gym for variety but we are good for now.

I started out prior to surgery at a "Curves" like gym. It closed a few months later so I joined a 24/7 gym. My work place gave us all a self care grant so I put it towards half of a treadmill payment. My gym membership has expired and I don't miss it. Too many hairy eyeball stares if you stay on 1 of the 2 treadmills too long:blink: I do a kick butt aquafit class once a week, ride my mountain bike when it's not raining, and do different programs on the treadmill. I plan on buying some weights and resistance bands at Walmart and then get a personal trainer to show me different things that I can do at home. I like the treadmil at home because even if I only have a half an hour I can still fit that in. My gym is a 15 minute drive away and the machines are not the greatest. Do whatever works for you and fits into your life best. I really enjoy exercising now and I crave it if I miss too many days. WOW! Never thought I would ever feel that way!!

We live to far from any real town to purchase a gym membership. So I have a gazelle at home, I also walk and do Water aerobics when the weather is good. I would love to have a curves close by but the closest is 6o minutes away. I do have access to the equipment at the school, but they are only open for a limited time frame each day and with my work it does not mesh for me. So I do the home workouts. I really do enjoy being able to do things on my time, be it mid morning or in the evenings.

I have DVDs galore, but I get the best work out is from my treadmill at my home. I mix it up, so my body does not get use to the workout. I vary the incline, speed and distance to work up a sweat.

I use hand weights for an upper body workout at home. It is more convenient this way and works with my hectic schedule.

If this questioned has already been addressed, I apologize, I couldnt find the thread.

I posed the question a couple of weeks ago that I needed convinced that I should exercise, and I was convinced. I have been doing some in home walking. My cable station offers a exercise on demand channel with various options. So far I have just done the walking a couple of times a week. I like it but I dont know if in the future I will be working out at a pace the is helpful. So I went to check out the local Victory Fitness Center. I really wasnt that impressed. There is a down payment of 116.00 and than it runs about 20 a month. Its pretty cheap but I was wondering if it was really necessary. So my question is this. Who has just worked out at home on there own, or have you joined a gym? And if you work at at home did you buy equipment?

I joined a gym a few weeks ago. I go 3 days a week. I walk on the treadmill at a 3.5 incline at about 2.7 to 3.0 speed for 15 minutes and then I get on the exercising bike for 15. That gets me my 30 minutes of cardio. After this, I to my inner and outter thighs, leg presses (laying down on a machine and pushing up 70 pounds as fast as I can, then I do the back on my calfs and front leg lifts, 10 times 3 times around on each machine. Then, followed by 20 minutes in the tanning bed. I have found that a workout followed by a tanning visit really cuts down on the soreness afterwards.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
