I have told one person and one person only: My husband. I love my family, but they tend to be know-it-alls and busy bodies, and I just don't want to deal with having to defend my decision or my eating choices for the rest of my life. The people at work are also great folks, but very gossipy and close-knit, with lots of the skinny women constantly advising everyone else on food choices (while nibbling on cake and chocolate all day themselves).

This is my body, my health, and my business. As @@gobeit notes, it is a medical decision, and I feel no qualms at all in keeping my medical history private.

I was worried, too, about eating at work, but so far no one has noticed a thing. I've said I'm dieting and watching my carbs, both of which are true. I eat cottage cheese, V-8, Soups, tuna in packets with low-fat dressing. We have had a couple of meetings where boxed lunches were ordered. I didn't eat the bread. Said I was doing low carbs (which is true!) which everyone understands, and it was no big deal at all.

I am getting my emotional support from my husband and other support on this website. I rely on my doctor's office for medical advice, but check here daily to see what other people's experience is. I've found this tremendously reassuring and helpful.

So, do whatever is best for YOU, but do give it serious thought. Once you've told a few people, the choice of keeping your medical history private is no longer yours.

Benjamin Franklin said some very interesting things about keeping secrets.

"Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead."

"If you would keep your secret from an enemy, tell it not to a friend."

"To whom thy secret thou doest tell, to him the freedom thou doest sell."

"Let thy discontents be secrets."

And heard this from a pulpit once, "You don't have to lie, but you don't have to tell everything you know."

Your mate was wrong to betray your trust. If you don't want to tell anyone, you should not have to. You will know with your "knower" when the time is right to speak up. I agree that distancing oneself socially from saboteurs and negative Nancies is the best thing you can do to maintain peace of mind.

I believe it is your personal business and you can tell who you want, when you want. I have told only a handful of people. Surgery for me is tomorrow. Once I start loosing weight and people ask I will be honest, but not until after my surgery, I do not want any negativity and rudeness. My husband and adult children and a couple close friends are what I need right now. Best of luck, you will do well even if people learn you are or have had the surgery! :)

I am in the middle stages or pre op and am excited to eventually be able to do things I couldn't do before.... but I asked my husband to not tell anyone I was doing WLS. I don't feel ashamed but do you think it's wrong for me to keep this a secret?

Hey there. This is something YOU want to do. It's no one's business on if you got the surgery or not. You're ridding yourself of the excess weight. It's your families decision. I say stick to that and I hope your husband can hold your secert. Good luck!!

I have only told my Hubby, Daughter, and Sister. I have no plans of telling anyone else. Including family, and co-workers. My employer knows I am having surgery but doesn't know what I am having done. I feel it is really no ones business.

i have been struggling as well. i just started pre-opt screening. I don't want to tell very many people because i am ashamed. i am ashamed that i let this happen to me. Also, i am not telling because i have already been hurt enough in this fat shaming society and i don't need any one else's judgment. i have told a few and don't feel like they are being very supportive, part of that could be that they just don't know what to say. so now i am turning to this forum in hopes of making some good friends that are going through the same thing.

i am looking at hopefully February for surgery.

I didn't tell anyone when I first started the program. I then told a friend of mine who said she was considering it. I then entrusted two friends. That's was it until about 3 months before surgery, then I told my family. That's it. I don't plan to tell anyone else. I think about it because since I've already done it they really can't have an opinion I'm going to care about but I haven't yet. It's really up to you. It's your business and you share with who you want to share with.

I told my immediate family and friends and they are very supportive, but I only told about 2 people at work that I really trust. The only thing that really worries me is having to tell my gossipy human research department because even though things are to be confidential I know it's not cause we have all seen rumor spread , I need to find a nice way to say keep your big mouths shut ????lol

It's definitely a personal choice.

My choice was to tell everyone. My story is all over Facebook and YouTube. I decided to tell people because I honestly only had a couple people to support me. And by telling everyone I was absolutely amazed by people's reactions. People who I NEVER thought would support me have turned out to support me MORE than the people I wanted to support me. Now I have this huge network of people who are standing behind me. Yes there's negativity but it's a lot easier to deal with when you have all this positivity. I find it also is holding me accountable. Now that I know people are watching and being educated by me I have to make sure I make the good choices and show people how much work this surgery is and how it's a VALID form of weight loss, not just a cop out. It's totally personal choice but that's why I chose mine. Best of luck :)

I agree. I tell everyone. But it is a personal choice. People will wonder how you're losing so quickly and after you took time off work if you do? It was just easier for me.

I have only told my sister (who will hopefully be accompanying me to Mexico) and my boyfriend. I'm a full time student, and my surgery is scheduled during our winter break, as that is really the only break we have to give me recovery time. I haven't told my roommate, but there's no way the Protein shakes and bars have escaped her attention. She probably thinks I'm on a high Protein diet.

I don't usually eat at school, but I have been drinking Protein Shakes for Breakfast in class, so when I come back no one should notice a difference. I'm also giving Greek yogurt another try, since it's a good source of protein.

I'm hoping that I can fly under the radar as long as possible, as my college is just like a high school, and secrets don't stay that way for long. But I'm sure people will start to notice and get curious.

I only share with people who ask and who could use the surgery themselves.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
