How to get enough protein 3wk out without protein powder

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I' 3 weeks out and i'm managing 1 egg and about 120 grams of tinned tuna a day (with a 50 cals worth of cruksit and 1 teaspoon of light mayo at each 'meal' - yes these are allowed on my plan but these but don't contain much protein)

I can't tolerate Protein shakes they make me dump (tried whey normal, whey isolate and pea isolate with various milk, lactose free milk, soy milk etc)

I'm barely managing 25-30 grams of Protein a day, I do see my NUT later this week so I'm hoping to get some answers there.

But i was so relying in these early months on a good Protein shake or two a day to hit those levels but now I can't I'm a bit lost :o| - Any tips??

Yes I am on the soft food stage (my surgeons plan is fairly progressive) unfortunately both of those have lactose in and also make me dump - pretty much anything dairy is out :(

thanks for responding though!! :)

What do you mean by dump?

Did you have bypass or sleeve?

Also, I don't think the Greek yogurt contains lactose.

Can you eat a cheese stick?

eggs?

I'm also at week three and struggling a bit to get in enough Protein. Isopure makes bottled fruit flavored drinks with 40 grams of Protein in them, though I've lost my love for sweeter tastes since having the surgery. They're around $4 at The Vitamin Shoppe. I don't know if you might tolerate them better than the shakes.

This list of high protein foods might be helpful to you:

Beans and lentils are a good source of protein. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't eat meat but of course those who do have many options. I've heard that if you put meat (or soy meat) into a crock pot with broth to soften it it will be gentler on your stomach, but I haven't tried that yet myself.

I had the sleeve. But ended up one if the few that gets dumping syndrome which is more common with bypass. Yeah greek yorghurt contains dairy sugars which make me dump i.e. Extreme runs within 15 minutes. So far can eat meat veg and crackers. I guess with my NUTs blessing I will have to up to four or five mini meals rather than 3 to get the Protein in.

I will try more fish and tinned chicken.

Thanks for your replies!

im 2 weeks out and have a complete disgust for Protein drinks if i have to drink another, i will throw it at someone. Tried all of them but now i manage one slim fast scoop with 1.5 cups milk and two tbsp of greek yogurt. This brings the Protein to somewhere around 30 grams.

Since i could not get my Protein Drink in and i hate cottage cheese, i resorted to low fat ricotta cheese, 2tbsp with salt and a tiny drop of Tomato sauce on. i tolerate it well and i have managed to up my protein, not to mention it feels like i ate something worth while!

Down 23 and looking forward to eating real protein.

I'm not a huge fan of Protein shakes, but I definitely do other Protein foods and they don't bother me at all. My favorites are protein hot chocolate, coffee, pudding, Jello, and oatmeal. All from BariatricChoice.com

Hope that helps!

At three weeks out, getting in enough Protein is much more important than sticking to three meals. For me, to get 100 grams of protein a day I have to eat more than three times a day.

I bought a new product called coco Protein, it's coconut Water with 20gm of protein no gluten and lactose free!!! If anyone like coconut water then definitely try this stuff. They also have a chocolate flavored one, but I'm sick of super sweet stuff so I opted for the piña colada flavor. Which doesn't taste like anything but coconut to me!! Oh!!! And it's about 120 calories for 12oz!!!! This has been my lifesaver as I don't do well with Protein Shakes.< /p>

I'm betting your post-op plan is similar to mine.. For my plan at three weeks, it is 3 mini-meals (2-3 oz soft protein), and two "meals" of Protein shakes. So I'm guessing you are eating (or are supposed to be eating) more than three times a day, but two of them are the shakes you can't handle? I agree with InnerSurferGirl, getting the Protein is way more important that the form it comes in, especially if you are already tolerating soft foods well and they are allowed on your plan.

I went out and bought some Isopure clear Protein drinks to top off my protein intake at the end of the day if I haven't reached my goal. I can tolerate the shakes, but am SO tired of them.

Also, I can't imagine having been on clears for a week, then full liquids for a week, and not even touching real food until two weeks or longer. I love my surgeon's more progressive plan, and am tolerating everything really well!

Ms. Twist,

Will you please share what your NUT tells you?

Thanks! :)

I feel so bad that so many good choices are not available to you. The only thing I've eaten that you haven't ruled out is Beans. Soft Beans pureed or refried beans (low fat) have quite a bit of Protein in them. You will definitely have to eat more than three times a day to get your Protein in.

Good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
