While in the hospital on strong pain meds - very very minor. Maybe a 2. When I first woke up in recovery, probably a 5 or 6 but they quickly got it controlled. Day 3 was not good for me but I was also passing a kidney stone at the same time AND Day 3 seems to be tough following any surgery (not just WLS). After Day 5, more just an annoying pain. Have you had other surgeries? I have had 4 shoulder surgeries, 4 lithotripsies (with stents for kidney stones) and hysterectomy. Bilateral ureter stents were by far the WORST! The rotator cuff surgery not great but manageable. WLS easiest of them all actually. Now I had bypass. I understand sleeve is a little more uncomfortable, but if you are afraid of the pain, don't be. It is absolutely manageable. Getting the fluids and Protein in is WAY harder than the pain. Oh, and I used heating pad a lot and even an ice pack some.

Hope that helps!

thanks Daisee68,

very good description of pain. I've had several operations, knee replacement, breast reduction, gallbladder removal ( not lap) and two natural childbirth so I understand pain and not afraid, but am curious to know the level of pain to be expected.

my pain in the hospital wasn't that bad, but of course I was under a lot of pain meds. I was really sick from the anethesia, so I was pretty bruised in the ribs from throwing up so much. I stopped taking the pain meds after day 3, which was the same day that I started getting relief from the gas in my stomach

I had almost no pain at all except for some very sore abs for the first few days. I used very little morphine in my pump at the hospital (and then only because the nurse wanted me to because of my sore abs - she wanted me to walk as much as possible). The codeine or whatever it was they sent me home with sat unopened. I had RNY, btw.

Compared to my hip replacement...relatively easy. If you had knee replacement you got this!

I just had surgery on August 5th. I experienced pain in recovery but it slowly became under control. My pain level is a little higher due to the fibromyalgia and ostioarthritsis. Now that I'm home I'm dealing with extreme gas. The pain from the incision isn't the problem. It's mainly the gas forming in my shoulder blade under the cuts and hurts so bad. Has anyone had this problem? And what did you to to relieve it.

Yes the pain in your shoulder is from surgery. I used gas x strips. They melt in your mouth. And try to walk more.

I had pain and nausea in recovery. They quickly fixed that. That same night I had very little pain. The next day I was agitated. I wasn't taking pain medication. The doctor told me to take it. So he gave me an IV medication. Then a few hours later sleeping medication. I sleep like a baby and woke up feeling great. I took the Vicodin before having the drain removed. I am 5 days post op and not in pain at all.

I have another question. I am in my 4th week now and still cannot eat puree nor solid food. When I try to eat either I throw up and I noticed that there is mucus present. I also cough really bad during the time I throw up because of the irritation. I have gone to the doctor and he says I will have to wait a little longer due to some people take longer than others to reach the puree time. I'm a little worried. I am getting my Protein down for the most part but still experience discomfort from that from time to time. Please help!!!

I hit the morphine button often during my first day post op, but went home without filling my pain script...never needed it.

I just had my gastric bypass on 7/12. The pain was undescribable. My ribs felt like i got in a fight and was kicked with steel toe boots and my entire abdomen hurt. Everytime I breathed in it hurt. I'm 3 days out now and it is much better. I didn't get a lot of pain meds and am currently on plain Tylenol. It is painful but it gets better quicker than you expect. I am still glad I did it and look forward to seeing changes in the near future!

@Annie_Smith - I did have those issues and it turned out to be a stricture (narrowing of stomach exit due to scar tissue overgrowth). It is easily diagnosed and corrected with an EGD and balloon dilation. If you continue to vomit, you should press your surgeon into doing an EGD. If he won't, you should be able to find a GI Dr who will.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
