Protein Shake Questions

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of trying to find a shake that I like. I have never liked chocolate milk or milk for that matter. I am waiting for my surgery date and will need to do my preop diet which includes shakes, then I need them after my surgery. So far I have tried Premier Protein (strawberry cream) I can only drink about half before it makes me want to barf. jay Robb (strawberry flavor) is just yucky. I got the Unjury in sorbet and chicken Soup flavor I just haven't tried it yet. I need something that will taste fruity. Can I add frozen or fresh fruits to my shake? Won't that increase the sugar and calories? HELP? Any advice is much appreciated.

Instructions from doctors will vary, but most won't allow you to add fruit, for just the reason you mention: calories, carbs, and sugar.

I would suggest trying the Syntrax Nectar powders -- for the fruit flavored ones, you mix them with Water. You can also add in some Crystal Light packets or Mio drops to bump up the flavors even more. You can try samples before you commit to a full tub, which I highly recommend:

http://www.mybariatricpantry.com/SYNTRAX_NECTAR_PROTEIN_POWDER_SAMPLES_p/nectar-sample.htm

Syntrax nectar is a great brand and has excellent numbers. It is 100% whey isolate, which is what most surgeons/dieticians recommend. When you are mixing drinks using powder, you may find that they get very foamy, which is pretty intolerable (especially after surgery). To combat this, either use a Blender Bottle and make sure it is 100% full before you start shaking, use a hand/immersion blender, or use a regular blender but let the shake rest in the fridge for a couple of hours before drinking.

Another possibility is Isopure, which is ready-to-drink and comes in a wide variety of fruit and tea type flavors. Some people like them, I have to say I found them absolutely disgusting and could only tolerate them if I mixed them 50/50 with something like G2, Powerade Zero, or Vitamin Water Zero.

Quick tip - stop trying to find something you "like" and focus on "something that doesn't make me nauseated or actively throwing up and that I can choke down for the first few weeks after surgery." Sometimes we have to put up with eating/drinking things that we don't really like, and the time when you are healing after surgery is one of those times. Good luck!

@@Bufflehead That's what I was going to recommend, the nectar products or Isopure zero carb. Alot of people enjoy those and there are alot of flavors to choose from

My NUT said I could add fruit, yogurt, or Peanut Butter to my shakes. So definitely ask if your plan allows it, it does help. I managed to survive on EAS advantEDGE shakes before I discovered Unjury. I do mix the sorbet flavor with crystal light - and there are a ton of flavor of crystal light/Mio for you to play with.

I am trying to have a variety on hand, I buy my Protein online because I work out alot and I buy 5lb jars, so far I have chocolate, and strawberry, and I'm trying to locate the punch flavor, BTW I've probably saved over $200.00 alone over the past 3 months by buying in bulk online and staying away from those Gucci overpriced ones

I like the muscle milk pro series that contains 40g of Protein per bottle. They have a few great flavors.

My nutritionist suggested a Protein Powder to me called ISO 100. I order it online with Amazon because it is so much cheaper. They have lots of flavors, never taste chalky and is pretty cheap compared to others. I drink the orange dreamcicle every day since surgery and im not sick of it at all (been 4 months). Hope this helps!

I use Isopure but the whey Protein Powder, either Dutch chocolate or strawberry (GNC stores) started it in pre op and really appreciated it post op because it's thin, no carbs, no sugar, sweetened with stevia just perfectly. And oh, I'm not a good friend of milk either and use almond milk. I also sometimes brew a cup of coffee and mix with some almond milk and the Dutch chocolate Protein powder and I've got a yummy mocha shake!

One drink I don't hear mentioned is Protein2O. Comes in lemon, berry and grape. 70 calories, 15 grams whey Protein. Takes like a fruit drink. I ah e two a day for 30 grams, then I will have either strawberry muscle milk or a Bariatric Advantage Protein Drink. In the Baritric brand I have Vanila (not so great, but I add PB2..dried Peanut Butter to improve taste,), orange...which tastes like an orange creams idle, and chocolate that tastes like a Wendy's chocolate Frosty when blended with ice.

I have heard great things about Isopure zero/carb. I ordered both strawberry powder and Dutch chocolate. I found them both to be disgusting!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
