How long are you supposed to wait on drinking before and after eating purees or Protein Shakes ?

Mine says 30 minutes before and 45 minutes after. Every doctor is different, but this is pretty average I think.

Most surgeons want you to not drink any liquids 30 mins before & after you finish your meal. By drinking liquids with your meal you wash your food down before you get all of the nutrients. Hope this helps.

My doctor has us wait 30 minutes after eating but doesn't care about drinking before. Also, Protein Shakes count as drinking, not eating -- there isn't any reason to wait after drinking a Protein Shake before drinking something else.

I just asked my NUT this to clarify. Mine is 30 before, none during and 30 after EXCEPT for shakes. She said no need to wait before or after the shakes but probably best to not drink anything during (i.e. don't dilute the Protein by washing it down with water).

According to my NUT, this only applies to lapband and bypass not the sleeve.

I was sleeved and my NUT gave the 30/30 advise and a doctor I had seen prior to choosing the doctor I used had the 30/30 rule in their paperwork for sleeves also

30 minutes seems to be the consensus.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
