I think I stretched my pouch

Recommended Posts

For the past couple of weeks I've been getting hunger headaches like my body is back to normal. I'm starving. I ate a hard boiled egg this morning and was able to eat a whole one, then I just ate 2 hotdogs, no bun. Just cut them into small pieces with mustard and ate every bit. I'm scared to call my surgeon because he may think that I purposely over eat and I really don't. If I go to long between meals I get a minor headache and I feel physically hungry. I remember feeling like this before surgery. I'm 6 weeks post op by the way. Surgery date was 4/8/15.

Are you drinking a cup of milk between meals? It really helps me. Or have a little cheese or nuts. For some reason those little Snacks carry me over to the next meal and then I am not starving and don't overeat.

Milk is the best solution, it fills your tummy, provides good Protein and Calcium. Sometimes I just need something.

In addition to what @@Djmohr said are you getting all your Water in? I find a warm beverage like tea, broth or lemon with honey in hot Water to take hunger away. Make sure you are eating high Protein meals/snacks. The higher the Protein the longer you will feel full. But sometimes we do just get plain old hungry, I do especially a day or so before TOM.

Are you eating dense Protein, (keeps you full longer), or slider Proteins that slide right on through your pouch?

Dense protein will keep you full for up to 5 hours as long as you don't drink with your meal or for at least 30 minute after

This will sound weird but what you are experiencing is head hunger not real hunger because when they do the surgery they cut the nerves that tell us we are hungry and they don't grow back for 6 - 8 months.

Make sure you are getting your protein, Water , Vitamins and a bit of exercise and you will do great

9 months Post-op RNY.

Definitely not. Eventually, everyone is able to eat a bit more and you still aren't eating a ton. Just remember to drink your Water and eat the right things and you'll do fine. :)

I also feel hungry all the time. After I eat my stomach feels like I'm experiencing hunger pains. A friend told me it was probably my stomach trying to handle the acid in there. What is everyone's opinion. I have been eating a lot of Tomato sauce on stuff.

I also get headache and believe I am hungry in between meals/snacks. I have tried to increase my Fluid intake between meals but right before dinner I swear Im starving! It is VERY difficult for me to slow down while I am eating dinner. I know it's head hunger but it is such an intense sensation! I struggle with it every day!

This is going to sound really annoying, but I'm going to say it because I experienced the same situations. This is not true hunger, your body is still acclimating to the pouch and I think you're confusing that with being hungry. Also, when it comes to food, our brains are our worst enemies. I used to believe I was hungry, eat, then be miserable because I was too full (or throw up). Even now, 6 years later, I rarely have hunger pangs. I know that everyone knows their own bodies, and that they believe what those bodies tell them, but trust me on this one, your body is fibbing. When the hunger 'pangs' strike, drink Water. Discuss with your surgeon how much you should be eating and stick to what they say.

Also remember that no matter what you're eating right now, it is way less than you used to, and your body will not accommodate enough food to cause you to gain at this point. Later, yes, but if you become vigilant now about what you eat, when you eat, and how much- you are going to do awesome.

The reason I believe its hunger is because I know the feeling and its familiar. Stomach growling, headache, and nervousness. Things I used to feel before surgery. But I can agree that my body fibs at times because no sooner do I take my first bite I'm full. I just shake my head and say really, I was just starving and now I can't even eat anymore after 1 or 2 bites. So I can agree to a certain extent.

What you're experiencing -- and may continue to experience for months or even years -- is head hunger. You didn't stretch your pouch with one incident of eating more than you should, but doing so repeatedly could indeed cause stretching.

When I get the hunger headaches I peel a pickle and eat it... In tiny slices... It helps me to feel better. I think it has to do with the electrolytes. It was also a suggestion from years ago when I did Medicaid so I knew it would work.

I forgot to ask... Are you taking your Vitamins as you should? That can give you the shaky nervous feeling you associate with hunger too. I don't know what you're taking but Bariatric Advantage worked best for me because they are chewable.< /p>

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
