Hi all,

have you all thought about those of us who have not or could not excerise due to our obestiy and health issues. those of us who knees, feet and legs can't handle the excerise that most of you do. I know it will get better once the weight starts to come off; but how much and how long before you can run 10k or bike 20miles w/o incident. So what besides walking and some lite areobics do us beginners do? we too need support.

Good luck to all that are doing well with their excerise program

Kim

I am also just starting my lap band journey (banded 1/27). I have rods and screws in my back, bad knees and bursitis in my left leg. I started Water aerobics before surgery and was able to continue one week after surgery (my doctor cleared me). I take 3 classes a week. I also ride a recumbent bike 20 mins. along with circuit training 3 days a week. I am getting much stronger already and believe I'll be able to increase my bike 5 mins. per day per week starting this week. I have lost 35 pounds since started the pre-surgery diet. Water aerobics is great for those of us just starting out and/or those with existing injuries. I'm also 57 so if I can do it, anyone can.

I feel the need to add that water aerobics is NOT a cake walk workout. I have had my ass handed to me in water aerobics.

I had the same issues every other morbidly obese adult had with knee and foot and a host of other aches and pains. I started on the elliptical, barely moving, it seemed. Now I run, do tae bo, lift free weights, do spin class....and I PUSH myself. Hard. Every.single.workout. What used to be 'pushing myself hard' in the beginning barely registers now but at the time it was hard and each workout I got stronger and all thoses obsticles that were there went away. Part of it was my physical condition improved making my body more efficient and part of it was the phsychological roadblocks I put up for myself. I HATED working out, omg, I had convinced myself for years how much it sucked. Now, it it the one thing I do 6 days out of the week, no exceptions. I would rather my house be messy, laundry be piled up, and the fridge be out of milk than miss going to the gym. My point is, it does not matter what you can do, it is the effort you put into what you are capable of doing and the drive you have to push yourself that matters.

Amen sister!

I have gone from one extreme to the other and back. As soon as I was able after banding, I was in the pool every night. The weight was falling off. I slacked and the weight loss slowed almost to the point of gaining. I have however found exercise again, and swim at least 4 times a week and try to get a min of 2500 yards. I also ride a bike and now that the weather is getting warm I will be back on the bike. Last year I logged 1550 miles. My goal this year is 3500. I have been walking and am starting to increase the pace to a moderate jog. Bottom line is to loose the weight EVEN with the BAND you must exercise.

Help, I got my band in Sept 09 and almost to my goal, about 20 lbs away, have lost 40. I am 53 and started to work out three weeks ago, since then I noticed that my hunger has increased ten times. I have had two fills one in 10/09 and 11/09, does this mean I need another fill? The hunger pains are so bad, just I had before my surgery. Funnyface.

I think whenever you feel hungry (other than normal hunger), it means you need another fill.

No, it's not a cake workout, but it IS easier on joints, knees, backs, ankles than dance aerobics, jogging or speed walking. So, I recommend it to anyone who is out of shape or who may need to take it easy on their joints, etc. I guess what I was trying to say originally is that if there's nothing else you can do because you're out of shape or you have joint or knee problems, to try water aerobics. It's a good workout without adding stress to your body.

FrenchVanilla (love your name, by the way!) - good for you for starting to work out! I understand the tough schedule - I have a 1 1/2-hour total commute by car/train to my job (that's each way) so workout time is limited for me as well.

I work it in by walking to and from the train station - it's a little over a mile. I used to walk 1.6 miles at lunch, but we've switched to summer hours, so I have only 30 minutes for lunch instead of an hour. Since I'm getting out of work a little earlier, I will add a walk in the evening when I get home - there's still a little daylight when I get home.

Incorporating exercise into your daily routine is critical - if you have to go too far out of your way in the beginning, it will be harder to stick with it. Since I have to go to the train station anyway, I decided to walk instead of taking the shuttle bus. I do little things throughout the day - take the stairs instead of the elevator, volunteer to run things across campus, etc. I've added weight training back into my workout because my weight loss is starting to really show and I want to work my muscles to get them ready to be 'shown' as the fat loss continues. I'm losing at a pretty good rate right now, and that's entirely due to the band and exercise in combination.

I am certain I would not be losing as much as I have without exercise. I'm still on my 5 - 6 days per week schedule - though because I've been walking the dog so much (every day, rain or shine) I really don't count it because I figure my body is used to it now.

I do try to push myself - a little faster, a little farther, carry a small hand weight, etc to make the walks different. Planning out different routes also helps.

Prevention magazine (prevention.com) has a feature called "My Walking Maps" that you can use to map out routes in your area based on address and they give you an accurate distance measurement. That's also helpful if you are trying to advance your distance.

Hope everyone has a wonderful summer!

I think you have inspired me. I was so good about walking and bike riding for the first year. Believe it or not I have been banded over two years and still drop some pounds here and there. I have struggled to be consistent with my exercise but definately feel better and lose more inches when I am exercising. I needed to see these post to get back into the swing of it. Thanks for the sound advice everyone!

We all have time to exercise. Don't wake up late, wake up early. If you have time to post you have time to exercise. Even 20 minutes a day twice daily is beneficial.

Now that is a short and sweet and EXCELLENT statement! I'm gonna remember that one every day. I get so busy with work and everything else I just have a hard time feeling that I don't have time to go --- but you're right (!!) everything else CAN wait!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
