Marijuana and Life after Bariatric Surgery

Recommended Posts

Actually - it is addictive, but it isn't the actual weed that is - its the habit, who you're doing it with or not with - when you do it... thats the addiction. I'm a purely social smoker - I only smoke with others. and that means that if we're not smoking (with someone I'm used to smoking with) I get bored and start craving it. Yes, I can ignore it - as I don't have an addictive personality, but I have a roommate that does and he can't go more then a couple hours without smoking because it helps keep him calm.

and I've seen how some of my friends who would smoke regularly would act slightly different when they aren't smoking and then smoke - then see them act completely different personality wise when they haven't smoked in months. Example is actually my sister - when she was smoking all the time and then on the days she wouldn't she'd be easily irriated and easily annoyed vs when she would go months without smoking - she'd have a lot more patience.

it affects everyone differently, and it depends on the person on if its addictive or not. The actual 'drug' may not be - but your habits make it so.

Anyhow - I originally started readg thispost because I wanted to see how ppl that have had the surgery dealt with smoking afterwards. Basically, I'm seeing it depends on the person - so I just have to keep in mind when I do, nothing but Water :D

People fearing the munchies are non-smokers. Like anything else, it's what you make of it. Marijuana does not force you to eat, and it isn't addictive.

Oh yeah?

Marijuana does make many people eat -- and eat a LOT!

It doesn't matter whether marijuana is "addictive" or not. For some people marijuana becomes an irresistible habit that's socially reinforced quite strongly because those they associate with friends / companions who smoke it. Like social drinkers, they become social marijuana smokers. And for those in whom marijuana triggers significantly increased appetites, marijuana can be a real barrier to weight loss.

This doesn't make marijuana a bad thing in itself. But it does make the use of marijuana incompatible with weight loss -- for some people.

As is often said on this message board, your experience is your experience. It doesn't mean everyone else will have the same experience you have had.

'People fearing the munchies are non smokers' . That actually mAkes me laugh. I used to smoke in my teens to my early to mid twenties. After smoking I could house a tray of pizza no questions asked. I'm not saying that weed made me do it but it lowered my inhibitions to say no that's probably not good to do and made me feel so hungry I could do it. I have nothing against weed, I'm just personally over the whole thing. You do you, but you just may want to rethink how you word your phrases. Everyone is different and reacts differently, and as different people we are going to answer differently than someone else. Just take every advice as it comes .. You don't have to take the advice if you don't like it :) good luck with everything

No carbs, no calories. Once American women figure this out, it will be legal everywhere. Just saying. (After being in professional politics for 30+ years I have figured out that what women want eventually becomes the law of the land. Doubt me at your peril. It just takes longer than it should because males make up 90% of the legislative bodies and every married woman knows how well we listen).

This is a very long post so i haven't been able to read all of the comments but I'm curious to ask if I'm the only person out there who doesn't want to eat after smoking? I never get the munchies I just feel relaxed. I'm a stress eater so I think this is why it helps me. Also I don't smoke much at all. Anyone else like this?

You just need to find the right strain that works for you! Not all of them will make you hungry, and if it does just make good choices and eat healthy. There are tons of doctors prescribing meds every day. A lot of the side effects are increased hunger and weight gain. This thread (well, the ignorant comments) made me laugh!:) So thankful for my cannabis script;)

No you aren't the only one . I don't get hungry . I actually get pretty productive with sativa and I like to use indicas to sleep at night .

@@shykneehighknee This is a facinating area. @@LColandrea is right about the different strains. One of the interesting things about legalization in Colorado is now there is REAL scientific testing of pot. How much THC is in it (akin to proof on liquor) as well as other factors. Also the medical pot people did a great job on showing how different strains affect people differently. I happen to do a great deal of work in Colorado, and I'm amazed at the entrepreneurial/regulatory effect of legalization.

If you have not taken time to look at the sites dealing with pot, take a look: http://www.thecannabist.co/2014/03/09/tests-show-thc-content-marijuana-edibles-inconsistent/6421/

This is a very different era and one worth watching. It changes the discussion you have with your kids over drugs. It's not a "You can't because it's against the law." Now the discussion is "why would you want to? What do you hope to have happen?" I think it could be very productive. That's my hope. My worst nightmare is very different.

I smoke for pleasure and to lessen pain. I use topicals to lessen pain and soften skin. For me it is an amazing healer of body and mind! I intend to continue marijuana use after my wls. Everyone is free to choose how or if they use it. Even my mom and grandma use a cannabis salve I make! ???? ✌

Thanks so much for posting this! Regardless of negative opinions, topics like this are a reality for some people, and I'm happy for a free and open outlet to discuss them. Thanks for your courage in posting this, and I'm sorry for some of the negative back lash. Don't be ashamed to own your truth. I'm sure throughout a lot of our lives, we've dealt with very hurtful opinions of our weight, and how we got to be our original sizes, and the choice to overcome our weight via surgery. As we all know, it's not about anyone else's opinion, this is something we had to do for ourselves. Keep being honest :D

Uh ... just because someone doesn't agree with your use of marijuana doesn't mean they're "bashing" you. It generally means they wouldn't use marijuana themselves and they and you disagree on this topic.

That is all.

Welcome to the Internet.

It would appear to me that MONEY is what is going to change the legalization of marijuana. I'm very glad some serious scientific testing is being done.

There are many ill people who have the right to try a plant derivative as an option to serious pain, sleep disorders, nausea etc. ....now with tinctures and edibles it is even more conducive to testing.

Colorado has more money now, and had talked about a permanent fund annual payment to residents ( similar to alaska).

Amazing the difference in my lifetime!

Education is power. And please don't confuse this for any endorsement for anyone underage. That is not what a developing brain needs.

Adults? Lots of options.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
