Anybody have a BMI of less than 35 before Lap Band Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody. I'm looking for people who had a BMI of less than 35 before surgery. I'm 5'6" and 207. I aready have Diabetes, high blood pressure, high Colestoral and hypothyroidism. I have lost about 10 lbs since the Doctor put me on meds but the weight loss seems to have stopped. I ask my doctor about having lap band surgery, her answer was I'm not fat enough. I then ask what I can do to get off all these pills she has me on, her answer was to lose 60-70 pounds and become a vegan. Now I have been trying for most of my life to lose weight, how does she think I'm going to do it this time? I feel like Humpty Dumpty. I just want some help. I have yoyo'd up and down from 180 to 220 for almost 20 years now ( since the birth of my first child) Has anybody out there have any words of wisdom for me other than push my self away from the table?

i hope someone responds to your questions because i am in the same boat. i only need to lose 50 pounds. most people would tell me i'm crazy to do this, but i'm at my wit's end. i can't help but believe that i would be successful with only 50 pounds to lose, but maybe not. good luck to you -- and me!!!!

i Hear That If Your Bmi Is At Least 35 With Comorbidities Such As Diabetes, Hypertension, High Blood Pressure Etc. That The Insurance Will Consider It. I Have A Bmi Of 37 And Am Diabetic, And I Have Already Undergone Most Of The Pre Op Tests. I Am Meeting W/the Surgeon Next Week, And Waiting For Ins. Approval. Hopefully A Surgery Date Isn't That Far Away. Best Of Luck To You.

Hey there

I'm booked in for surgery in 3 weeks and my current (and highest BMI) is 34. Theres lots of research out there saying that a BMI of 32-35 is possible with co-morbidities.

I live in New Zealand however so that may make things different! Its costing me NZ$15,000 which is about US$12,000 (no insurance companies cover for this in my country). And there are only 3 surgeons in New Zealand who do the Lap-Band!

Do lots of research on the internet. Talk to your doctor. Don't take NO for an answer. I was told NO by my general doctor so I approached the surgeon and he said YES!

I was right at 35 when I went to the seminar so I stopped dieting and by the day I saw the doctor my BMI was 36.9 and since I have comorbidities and my family history is really bad (obesity, diabetes, heart problems to mention a few) I was ok by my doctor. Insurance did not cover it.

You should be able to be approved for surgery since you have complications directly related to the weight issues. I can't believe your

Dr. said those things to you. Don't they realize that if you could loose 50 or 60 pounds you would have done it already? My BMI is 36 but I have some pre-diabetic things going on and high cholestrol so I am just waiting for my appointment next week and hopefully a date in August. Good luck to you and don't give up!

I hear your frustration. I'm so tired of hearing the Dr. tell me to lose weight to get my PCOS under control...it is what makes me GAIN weight. I spent 6 months working out 4-6x a week for 1.5-2.0 hours a day and dieting and journalling my food. I lost 10 lbs! That's it! I'm tired of this fight, but the only alternative is to let it go and watch my health deteriorate! I got the lapband because I have a hard time staying on a diet for LONG periods of time especially when it comes to family get togethers so after 6 LONG months of dieting I can easily blow it in a long weekend and put 5-6 of it back on. This is forcing me to stay honest and to keep plodding ahead. You've come to the right place for support and understanding.

The breaking point is 35, however like some posted it is different in different areas. I was like Mystic, I started at 35 and then it went up through my application process. It took me 6 months to go through the process with my surgical group I selected. I live in Virginia. My insurance, fed BCBS, approved it based on all my health problems in addition to the bmi, which is required if below 40. My doctor did not feel I was appropriate for bypass at all, but was a good candidate for band. I really see on this site, more banders with a start BMI of 42 and less. I would go for it. I did not want to pay myself. if that is not an issue, you most likely will find someone to do it.

Good Luck.

Hi Renee,

I too have yo-yo dieted for more than 20 years. I have ignored my Dr. and went to Laspband seminars and They will do it. YOu don't have to have your Dr. permission,If you have the money. Good luck

Hi Crystal

I can understand how you feel but unfortunately with a BMI of 28 you may well struggle to find a surgeon to do it! I also know someone who gained 10kgs (22lbs) just so they could have the surgery (self pay) and haven't regretted their decision for one second but it does seem very extreme and sad that one would have to go to these measures... personally with the way I've struggled with yo-yo dieting all my life I just don't think I could do that... luckily I was fat enough :-)

Good luck

Hi, I was banded on 26th May 2007 with a BMI of 30.7. I have lost 18 pounds since & will have to wait for my first fill end of July to get any restriction.

I didnt think my consultant would agree to do it but he did.

Please bear in mind I am a self pay & it has cost 8000 which has included all fills, diet plan, advice & 24 hour bariatric nurse assistance for a year.

Thanks everybody for responding! I am even more convinced that this is what I need to do. My family has been very supportive, my sister is even planing to go with me to have it done too. I have had several people tell me I'm beautiful just the way I am (they've never seen me naked!) and others tell me to just have some will power and push myself away from the table. I'm really glad I found this site, just wish I'd found it before I ask for other peoples input. I think I would have just kept it to close family members. Debbie and I have been checking into going to India for the surgery - Medical Tourism. Have any of you had yours done there or know of anybody that has? We are both selfpay and it looks like it will cost around $7500 roundtrip all enclusive. I just don't want to sacrifice my health to save money. I found a clinic here that will do it but they want $15,000 plus pre-op test and fills. So a vacation to India sound pretty good. Thanks for being here!, Renee

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
