this is dumb but my biggest question is...

How hard is it to not drink before/during/after eating? I've always had at least one full glass of Water with my food. I enjoy it so much more. Of course, look where that got me :)

Was it really hard to adapt to?

It was at first, but like so many of the changes we make with WLS, once you get past that "hump", you really don't miss it that much anymore. I have a really hard time tolerating any food that's remotely dry, so with the moister consistency of my food nowadays, I find that I don't need to drink that much around mealtimes. The only time I (sort of) break that rule is if I'm eating out somewhere with people other than my family & I'm getting that familiar feeling that something's too dry- I'll take a sip of Water right after a bite to keep me from feeling sick. I normally drink over 100 oz. of Fluid a day, so not drinking during meals is actually a nice break for me.

I think its very hard. I an 5 months out and really want a drink while eating. I sip cause I really have to dink while eating.

To me its more annoying than anything only because you have to watch the clock.

There is an app called Bariatric Timer. I use that pretty religiously. If I sm eating something spicy, I take 1 or 2 tiny sips, other than that, I adapted. You do have to make sure that you are using the rest of the time in getting your Water intake. So it is really feast or famine with fluids! Good luck

I sometimes struggle in the first 5 minutes or so after a meal and am sure that I'll never be able to wait 30 minutes to drink, but it almost always becomes easy after a few more minutes. If I eat something really spicy or drier than normal, I'll pop open a Greek yogurt and eat a couple of bites. Although completely satisfied with my meals, I don't often have the uncomfortable full feeling after eating - I eat the pre-measured quantity and am done - so there's almost always room for some yogurt in a pinch. And the moisture of the yogurt always does the job.

Yes it's hard but it's doable. I have always drank a lot of Water (or wine) with my meals. If the waiter wasn't around to refill my glass, I would really stress out. But, for the most part now, I'm good with it. With some exceptions but I make sure to keep that to a minimum.

Honestly it is not that hard unless you are eating something very dry or salty. When I have had something that is salty I definately watch the clock. But most meals are no problem and I have found that I can wait even longer.

I've worried about this, too. At least one of my prescription meds causes me to have a very dry mouth, so I'm constantly sipping something no matter where I am.

I also worry about how I'm going to make it the first day or so after surgey until I can get some moisture in my mouth. Did anyone else have any problem with this?

My hope is that my surgery in 2 1/2 weeks will improve my health issues enough that I can quit taking those meds forever!

I lived on ice chips for the whole day after surgery! That and these little sponges soaked in Water to swish around my mouth and keep it wet :)

I am only 17 days out but I can tell you that I am staying thirsty all day, I am sipping Water the whole time but my mouth is dry and I never feel that I had enough, I am actually sure that am not having enough because of my urine color (sorry for the TMI). my problem is the low intake of Water in general and not only with food, I took one sip with food one time (only because I forgot) and it was so painful so am never doing it again for another 2 months until I heal completely.

Very hard. I sip a lot. I can't stand it! But I've lost 70 pounds in three months so who cares if I'm cheating a little !

It's pretty tough, but it's habit now. I do drink right up until it's time to eat, but then I wait my 30 minutes. The worst part is when I'm eating something spicy. I've had to tone down my hot sauces, because I have to wait too long to drink, and I can't eat a piece of bread to help calm things down. But I am definitely ready to drink after those 30 minutes.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
