Well, since I wrote that, I'm craving sugar,a nd never did before. My guess is I'm trying to get megacalories in and can't do it with hard to swallow foods. Bummer. gotta whip myself into shape here.

I cook alot of chicken tenders and keep bags in the freezer and refrigerator. I also do alot of Jennie-O turkey-their hot sausage is really gooood. I also eat buffalo. I grill lots of veges. I'm pretty simple.

On mushies, I really started enjoying Soups, but I've gotten rid of them and am trying to eat food I have to chew alot...and so here comes this new thing...sugar cravings! My body is trying so hard to gain weight!!!!!

Life is a challenge.

I'm sitting here studying the nutrition facts on my 16oz container of Friendship whipped cottage cheese. If you ate the entire container it would be 360 calories, 12 carbs, 12 grams of sugar, and 64 grams of Protein. I guess if you just spread one container out through your day that would take care of all your protein requirements, without a gazillion calories either!

I've found a great source of Protein that works well...it's Quinoa. Quinoa, pronounced keen-wah, is not a true Cereal grain, but rather the botanical fruit of an herb plant. It is treated as a grain in cooking. The grains are small yellow flattened spheres, approximately 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter.

Basic Cooking Instructions: Because some of the bitter saponin covering on the grain can still be present even though most quinoa is washed before being sold, you should thoroughly rinse the dry grain until the Water runs clear. Combine 1/2 cup quinoa with 1 cup Water and simmer for 15 minutes or until tender.

Quinoa salad Recipe

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup quinoa, well rinsed and drained
  • 2 large red apples, diced (for those having problems with apples dry cooling them down first to soften.)
  • 1 cup chopped celery (peel strings)
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries (such as Craisins)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup non-fat vanilla yogurt

Place water, apple juice, cinnamon and rinsed quinoa in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until all of the liquid is absorbed, approximately 15 minutes. Cool, transfer quinoa to a large mixing bowl and refrigerate, covered, at least 1 hour.

Add apples, celery, dried cranberries and walnuts to quinoa. Mix well. Fold in yogurt. Serve immediately.

Serves 8.

Per serving: 253 calories, 7 g fat, 2 mg cholesterol, 45 g carbohydrate, 4 g Fiber, 6 g Protein, 2% Vitamin A, 6% Vitamin C, 9% Calcium, 15% Iron

I'm planning to adjust the above one for a Breakfast idea...I'll probably avoid the celery and walnuts for now and maybe add peaches.

I cooked it using chicken broth, and made a cold salad with it. I added cooked diced carrots, peeled diced tomatoes, chopped mushrooms, avocados, and peas. I tossed with a fat free creamy Salad Dressing (ranch, caesar, plain yogurt mixed with dill...what ever flavor you like). Very Yummy!:hungry:

If you can tolerate oatmeal I think you should be ok with Quinoa. It's packed with Protein and other great stuff!

I just had my band on May 17th. Do you think it is too eraly for a Red class of wine? Is beer carbonated and out of the questionf forever?

I don't have a drinking problem, but I do like to go out and socialize. I am 32 and had to pay cash for my operation, so I don't want to do anything to mess it up.

Thanks for help with questions,

ZIMA

From what I've heard and researched, beer is the one of the worst forms of empty calories/carbs you can consume. A glass of wine is actually good for the body and won't hurt the band. The problem with anything carbonated is that it can stretch the "pouch" doctors created when they put in your band. This will hurt your weight loss in the long run. A stronger drink won't hurt as long as consumed in small amounts on rare occasions (again, empty calories). If you do drink, try to eat when you do as well.

Does anyone have a site that lists Protein values? This would really be very helpful. I'm trying to keep a food diary to help get back on track but am having trouble finding the values.:hungry:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
