Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?

Recommended Posts

Im not exactly sure where to post this question since its kind of an in-between topic, so I apologize in advance if you see this in two locations….

For all those people who originally had the sleeve and were converted to the bypass, I was curious to know WHY? What was your journey?

For those who had to have this done do to gastritis, what was done for that before they jumped to conversion?

Did anyone have to have this done because of stomach spasms?

I had my RNY surgery last Tuesday. The reason is that my stomach was producing to much acid. When you have a sleeve there is no where for the acid to go but up. I tried to control it with medication but it did not help. For me the RNY was the answer.

I am also having the conversation surgery due to acid reflux (Feb 23). I have gained some weight back (30#s of the original 90# lost) and am worried about this surgery. I know it will help clear things up medically, or so they say, I am just concerned about re-routing organs.

I have read my share of medical treatments/stories and successes. However I have to keep remembering how bad I feel when my stomach reacts and that this will change things for the better.

Just getting a little bit of hesitation. I was originally scheduled to have the Roux 2 years ago and two weeks before my surgery, I chickened out and switched to the sleeve. I regretted it ever since.

I wish you the best of luck. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get through this and make it to surgery.

I have not been fated to have a revision. But I'm fearing that's where things are heading.

Mickally: what kind of meds did you try ? How long did you have issues before they revised you? How much weight have you lost?

Padraigma613: do u know why you gained the weight back? Was it because the stomach acid mimicked hunger and you ate more or is there another reason?? What was done for your Gerd?

Sleeve to rny 12/29/14 because of GERD. SW 233 CW 202. Doing really well other then scar tissue makes it a little more difficult to eat.

Hi artsong, thanks for replying. How long were you sleeved before they converted u to rny? Have you noticed an improvement? How has your weight loss been compared to the sleeve?

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I was on 80 mg of Omeprazole a day and tums several times a day. I had to be very careful when I ate, nothing spicy not even a little spice. I started having issues a few months after my sleeve as soon as the doctor tried to get me off Omeprazole after about 6 months he doubled the dose at 14 months I had the revision. So far I have had no reflux.

Thanks for the reply mickally. Wow and I thought my 40 mg was bad lol. Ice to know I could still go up on it tho.

My spasms are much better, think that was brought on by the vomiting for the tummy flu. Still got gastritis and it's now turning into reflux. Woke up last night with pain and spent 4 hrs regurgitating my dinner. Not cool

Zunbapink..... I feel for ya, I have a tough time exercising too. I have an immune deficiency and get sick alot. Between that and being in pain every time I eat, exercising is the last thing on my mind. I struggle with eating and have resorted to the bad habit of grazing just to get ANY food in. My surgeon got upset with me when I told him that tho. But seriously, does HE exercise when he has the flu? I hope your revision goes well. Please keep in touch, I havnt had one but I think it's heading it that direction

Yeah I've resorted to slider foods too. I feel like so much of a failure for it. How far out were u before the docs decided revision was best? How much have u lost?

I'm on double dose omeprezole, ranitidine, carafate and nitroglycerin.

Good luck with ur insurance!

I'm band to sleeve and soon to be mini gastric bypass on 4/23. I'm hoping 3rd times the charm ! I was very successful with the band but the sleeve has been terrible. Always hungry and can eat anything and everything as much as I want like it never even happened. The 23rd can't get here soon enough !

I was sleeved on Feb. and just had to have bypass last Thursday due to gerd my stomach was inflamed and full of bile. We tried medication with no success. I am 6 days out still in a ton of pain and feels like I have the worst indigestion ever!! The only way I can get comfort is to lay down and prop up my stomach. Is this normal?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
