Feeling discouraged no support

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am feeling a little blue I have shared with some family and friends my decision to have gastric bypass. All I hear is your going the easy way out, your being lazy why don't you just get off your butt and excercise and eat well. My surgery date is 01/29/15 and start my Liver shrinking diet on 01/15/15.

Don't be blue--Not everyone understands; that's why you have all of us!. seriously, only people who have walked in your shoes can fully understand the decision you have made. Others, even the ones we love and love us, don't always understand ---they may not express it well, but most of them are just worried about surgery & complications.

If you've done your research and you're committed to this process, then just remember you are doing this for yourself and it shouldn't be based on everyone else's opinions--just yours & your doctor's. I know that everyone in my life that was against the idea of surgery has since changed their minds now that they see how my health and my self confidence has changed. I'm truly happier and that shows in my relationships as well.

Best of luck on your surgery and your journey; Keep us updated on your progress!--Lisa

Have you ever thought that its them that are afraid? Afraid of change, they are so use to you being the overweight one that they need you to stay that way. You are doing this for you, not them. Some family are going to be that way regardless.

What we are doing is no picnic. You do what is best for you, don't base your happiness on others no matter who they are, Good Luck to you

Never, EVER let anyone make you feel like you've taken the "easy way out". To this day I still dont understand how WLS (followed correctly) is considered EASY.

Its easy for those around us who still choose not to take a stand for their own health to "nit pick" or try to bring us down. As they say, misery loves company, in which you do NOT want to be a part of. Many of those who have bad things to say are enablers and will make this epic journey for you painful.

You've taken a stand and chose to better yourself. Does your hospital offer support groups? I highly recommend attending if they do.

Sadly I also have many friends and family members who are constantly saying "When are you going to stop losing weight?" "Dont you think you've lost enough? You're going to disappear." Or "Do you eat?" The last one hurts more then anything, but I shrug it off and I smile. I stand proud for what I've done, the journey I've taken, and the fact that I chose to really live and enjoy life.

You're going to do GREAT! Change isnt always easy, but when the change is good, I can promise you it is SO good and SO worth it.

I'm ok sometimes I ask myself why I did this. It's mostly when I see my family eat :(

Trust me, that thought will go away! Next thing you know you'll be looking at yourself going " I am SO glad I did this!"

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
