P.S. Giada is amazing. Her recipes sorta go against my natural instincts, what with all the squeezed lemon juice atop. But what a bod! And who doesn't like good Italian food? Except of course now - the combination of Pasta and the band - not so much!

Oh, I love the squeezed lemon. ;)

I actually found this great recipe online somewhere for roasted cauliflower topped with squeezed lemon and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese. It tastes so good!

As for pasta, I'm praying that I'll be one of few who can tolerate pasta once I'm back to eating solids in about a month. We'll see. I don't want to down a whole plate, but just a taste or two would be fantastic. Only time will tell! :(

I'm with you on the Sandra Lee thing. I'm not buyin' it. Plus, the fact that her kitchen changes colors every episode is fine - but that she has a matching KitchenAid Artisan mixer for every kitchen color scheme irks me.
Speaking of color changes, my teenage son "sees red" every time Sandra Lee starts going on and on about her "amazing tablescape." You should hear him muttering. It goes something like this: "What the heck is a tablescape? Why would anyone want all that crap on their table? How can you fit any food on there?" ;)

What would be really funny is if he could tape a "tablescape" segment of her show and insert his comments as a voiceover! LOL!

I may make fun of some of her ideas, but I do admire her for being a survivor. I like people who can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and make something of themselves despite the odds. :clap2:

If the eldest doesn't implode pretty soon, a lot of people are going to be very surprised. Is she a freak show, or what? OMG, she's giving bi-polar a bad name.

Lemon does marry up real nice with cruciferous vegies and parmesan and butter. Blanche brussel sprouts, then saute them in butter with a little onion. Put them on a plate with real parmesan, not the stuff in a box, grate a little black pepper, and squeeze a little lemon juice. Toss and eat. Verrrry yummy.

Ok already. You've convinced me to buy a lemon and some brussels sprouts or cauliflower and fix 'em up with freshly grated parmesan. I admit that it does sound great.

Semper Fi!

I used to love love love food Network, but it has changed dramatically and I don't like it nearly as much as I used to. I loved Sara Moulton's Cooking Live (and used to do the Wednesday Cookalongs). I could tolerate Emeril, especially Essence of Emeril vs. the circus of Emeril Live. I liked Ming Tsai, David Rosengarten and lots of others who have been long gone from FN.

Rachael Ray is just too much of a cartoon character for me with her catchphrases, I'm not a fan. I used to like Paula Deen a lot, she reminded me of a long-lost relative, but I think she too has become too cartoony and exaggerates her accent as she has gotten more popular (which really gets to me since I am a Southern girl). Can't look at Giada Di Laurentiis because she appears to have a million teeth.

I enjoy Mario Batali -- too bad they canceled Molto Mario (not sure why they canceled Emeril Live too since he has been there since the beginning).

I liked to learn when I watched food Network. I'm not a food snob, but someone making food out of mostly boxes and cans (which is why I don't like Sandra Lee at all) is not interesting to me. I want to learn new techniques, new cuisines, how to use different and unusual ingredients.

I do like Barefoot Contessa although she can come off a little Martha Stewart-like, and Nigella Lawson. I don't care for the reality shows and the competitions, and that seems to be more and more what FN is about. I watch PBS and other channels for the type of cooking show that I like.

All my two cents here...to each her own of course!

I really like the Barefoot Contessa, she is a really smart chick and has a pretty hot husband. Sandra Lee semi-Homade has overcome a lot, many of us have, but enough with those cocktails. I agree all those cake, cookie etc. competitions + Iron Chef anything need to go. The real Iron Chef was kind of cool when it was all dubbed, and the cute little Japanese movie starlet, is saying something like the blending of the flavors is so wonderful etc. It was kind of like a Godzilla movie with weird food. I adore Diners,Drive-In's and Dives Guy is very funny. Thank-Goodness none of those places are near me, it could be dangerous.

I know this may sound HORRIBLE but I am tired of Oprah YES I said it OPRAH!! I mean there are plenty of homeless, deprived americans she could at least help them out some...instead she sends all her money to Africa (which is great) and gives crap away to people on her show..(not so great there's homeless people who need the money) but instead jane doe for Jersey gets a new blender. and everyone else gets a car! I guess I just have a heart for Americans in need...sorry for my rant guys it just bothers me!

A wise teacher I used to work with used to say that you've gotta clean up the mess in your own back yard before you clean up someone else's. We have enough needy folks right here that people like Oprah could be helping out.

Perhaps Oprah does charitable work here in the U.S. as well. Maybe it isn't advertised as much. It's the "in" thing among the stars right now to adopt babies from Africa, so maybe that's why her girl's school has gotten so much press vs. anything she's working on here?

I don't know why Oprah spent so much money on that one project when so many people are in need. I am also curious as to why. I do, however, have some ideas. It is likely - she seems to have made it her mission to help people, hasn't she? - that she does quietly give to many other charities but wanted to this particular project to receive lots of publicity in order to encourage other similar projects in this part of the world.

While there certainly is poverty in this continent it does not match the misery found in Africa. In theory most if not all people here who work hard and have dreams can receive some kind of education, get a job, have a roof over their head, hot and cold running Water, a television, sufficient food in order to thrive, and even some kind of health care in the case of an emergency.

This is not the case in Africa. This continent really is the poorest and most dysfunctional place on earth. Oprah may feel that by giving these black girls an education she is making a tiny but significant difference. She may be hoping that these girls will go on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses and will work within their communities. Building a school is a great idea; you are teaching people to help themselves, not to rely on hand-outs.

As for the give-aways which she does to those in her audience, well, she undoubtedly derives a lot of personal pleasure doing surprising folks with gifts but these stunts are really all part of show business. I don't see that these hand-outs are fundamentally any different than the big prizes in those contestant shows; they are all gimmicks designed to get you to watch the show, aren't they? And as such they are corporate tax write-offs. To complain, therefore, that these gifts are stealing from America's poor is both illogical and unfair.

I watched Oprah yesterday with the Marion Jones interview - what struck me was that Oprah crucified James Frey for lying she was really pissed at him called him out and totally trashed him but she didn't crucify Marion for lying.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
