Over 40 havent had surgery yet.... Concerned

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

Im new to this forum, Im currently 43 and going through the pre op process for gastric sleeve. Surgery will probably be in feb/march. I know im high risk and im probably crazy, but we really want to conceive after surgery, I know my age is a factor, Ive had 3 miscarriages in the past. Should I give up the thought of conceiving at this age? I will be 44-45 when the time comes to try. Just curious to hear anyones thoughts;)

@@Goldyloqs

i agree!!

welcome, welcome

this is your first post too!!

as others say

you'll find lots of good info/advice/SUPPORT on here :)

you might be wondering about subjects that are being posted

be interested in the responses

ask all your questions too

there is a search button in the top right hand corner

that will help too

you've got time before surgery to do more research

there are books around like WLS for Dummies

others too

read read read

can never have too much knowledge

I see B) you are a smart cookie

thats why you are checking out this board :)

everyone here is great/nice except :o .............. ;)

are you saying you are thinking your age makes you high risk, or the fact that you've already had 3 miss carriages (so sorry )

if its some other reason, i'm sorry - no need to answer

as far as trying for a baby at your "age" ;)

MANY people have kids in later years

if doc sees no prob - then try, try again ;)

I had my wonderful daughter as i was turning 21

if i had her 10 years later, i probably would have know a few more things

if i had her in my early 40's - (like you) i would have been a genius

to finally answer your initial question about should you have a baby at your age

if doc says no prob - i don't think your age has anything to do with it

as you are losing weight - you will be able to run around with your kiddo and be very active you and youngun will both love that

doc knows about your history, talk to him about your concerns, worries

good luck with surgery in a couple of months :)

kathy

Thank you so much for sharing your story! At 43, I have very similar concerns. My surgery is scheduled for July 13, which means I'll be 44ish when we conceive. I have been concerned about this since I decided to have the surgery. After seeing your post, I realize I am not the only one going through these feelings. I also realize my expectations are not unreasonable! Thank you again for sharing!! Prayers to you for a healthy surgery, post op, and pregnancy! Future mommies unite!

I am 43 as well, and we don't have children. One of the reason why I decided to have surgery was to increase my chances. It's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm pre op going through the testing to get approval for surgery. *babydust* to all.

I love love love reading this thread. I am 35, having surgery soon, but would like to have a baby once it's safe. I never felt I was healthy enough before, and when I first starting considering surgery, I thought it meant I was giving up ever having a baby. But seeing all this positive feedback on here has made me realize that is not the case. Thank you everyone!

My Grandma was 37 when my mother was born and 41 when my aunt was born. My mother was 44 when my youngest brother was born. She thought she was going through the change until "the change" started to kick. Surpriiiiiiiise! He just turned 49 himself.

While I know it's not anyone's first choice, the odds of conceiving at 44+ are slim no matter your weight. Very very slim, despite any amount of medical intervention.

You might also research donor egg programs to see if any feel like a good fit for you. You will be healthy to carry a pregnancy and have much much higher chance of conception (70% vs less than 7%.)

Best of luck.

I am 42 and we are ttc. We conceived in Nov but miscarried at 8 weeks. Doctor not concerned at all. Just wants us to wait until after my next period to try again. It can happen. Get healthy, get to goal, and get it on. ????

I just had my first at 38. Will be 39 almost 40 when we start trying again. I don't think it is crazy.

Please don't give up! By the time I'm ready to try after surgery, I will be the big 3-0. The thought is killing me. We have been trying for 8 years now, so a part of me fears potentially facing more years of trying after I lose the weight. Putting me closer to 40. But I haven't set a "cut off" age of when I will give up. My mama was older when she had us, and she didn't have any complications. I've also spoken with many older women who conceived at a later age and had healthy pregnancies and babies. I say that if this is what your heart desires, go for it! Just think about the risk younger obese women have in getting pregnant. Your body may be healthier and more capable of carrying a child.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
