Why Do So Few BP Members Have Weight Tickers?

Recommended Posts

Compared to other WLS forums, only a minority of BP members seem to have and maintain weight loss tickers.

Likewise, it's hard to tell how long ago many members had WLS or even if they've had surgery yet.

Without this context, it's hard to respond appropriately to some questions and threads.

I encourage others to put up tickers. I think it would help other members to be more helpful to you.

(I have no doubt this topic has been raised and debated before, since nothing on these forums is new. ;) )

I think I have one...but I can only update it on the computer. 95% of the time I'm using the phone app. The app doesn't show tickers and doesn't allow you to update it either.

I agree with you too. My issue is the BP app. You can't see the ticker using it so I end up switching back and forth looking if there's one. Congratulations on your weight loss so far. It looks as though we had WLS the same month. Best of luck to you.

I don't use the app, but find limitations on BP when using it on my small device. I cannot create a ticker, but there are settings available to manage one. I also can't see the text when I create a post either.

My stats are kept up to date that appear next to my posts and responses. It shows the date of surgery, surgeon, starting weight, current weight, and total weight lost. Why do I need a ticker in addition to that? Isn't the ticker just a visual representation of info. that is already displayed?

I think some people aren't comfortable with using the tickers and/or filling out all the demographic info. Even here on a forum full of fatties and ex-fatties I think some people are embarrassed to put down how much they weigh. The flip side is that some people may not be as tech savvy and are unaware of how to click on the various tabs to complete the profiles.

BTW- for those of you who post primarily from your smartphones, if you go to your internet browsers and use the full version of the site instead of the mobile app, you can do everything you would on a regular computer.

Thanks @@BLERDgirl! I went to the full site and finally updated my weight.

On a side note, @ I saw Bruce Brient did your surgery. Small world, he was the surgeon who removed my gallbladder over 4 years ago and suggested I look into WLS! I had to go to Mexico though because his office needed $15,000 to do the surgery out of pocket. Were you happy with him?

OK. I admit it. I am one of those who doesn't know how to cut and paste. I have minimal computer skills, and no one to show me how to do things. I live in a very rural area, and don't have access to computer classes. I know there are others out there like me, who are all alone (my husband doesn't know about this stuff, either, and we haven't any children). Since I am new to this state, I haven't any friends. I am hoping to find some via this site?

Hi Krisrpaz,

My wife and I like him a lot. He was straight forward about the surgery and the risk involved. I had to drive down to Gainesville Fl to get my WLS done since Valdosta Ga doesn't have a doctor here. Dr Brient keep me a few extra days to be sure everything was good to go. Still, a couple days later I had to go back because of internal bleeding. I'm sure it wasn't a problem in the surgery but me that caused the issue. I now drive down every few months to get my checkups. He shouldn't be working to much longer though. You know he's in his mid 70s now.

I find weight loss tickers a little kitschy so that's the reason I don't have one

I chose not to use a weight loss ticker, because I am not fond of weighing myself often in real life. I personally do not like the constant reminder/visual while I am on here. I have lost quite a bit of weight and feel great, but I sometimes get sick of the numbers and/or the focus on numbers. This is just me personally ...other folks tickers don't bother me at all.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
