Blood Work Results - what could it be.

Recommended Posts

So on Thursday I did my 3 month follow up blood work and today Sunday am I received a call from the doctors office that the doctor would like me to come in and discuss the results. Currently the earliest appointment I can get is Thursday, by then I will have diagnosed myself with every disease possible. My recovery has been great. I have lost 50lbs since surgery. I work out , swim don't eat more than 800 calories a day. I could drink more Water but I haven't been dehydrated and have felt great.

Any ideas of what possibly they could have seen that would be cause for concern. Any one else get 3 month post surgery results that doc wanted to discuss. I had surgery in Mexico so this is with the family doctor.

Getting a call regarding lab results and needing to follow-up with a doctor is common. Getting that call on a Sunday is weird and I would be slightly concerned as well. I've gotten a call like that before, but never on a weekend (seeing as though the offices are closed on weekends), and I just about panicked. I couldn't get an appointment sooner than a week and that was just not going to fly with me.

The solution? I simply went to the hospital's medical records department and got a copy of my lab results and read them myself. It was quite clear that the alarm bell went off because of my H&H; I was anemic. All of my fears subsided and then I kept my appointment the following week. So that's my suggestion to you for first thing tomorrow morning. Do you know which labs they drew on Thursday?

The office does run limited on the weekend but that certainly was quick. I will call lab tomorrow that is a great idea. Hoping it just anemia but my mind is churning.

Put your mind at ease as best you can. When a lab is slightly abnormal, phone calls like that are made. But if the lab result is critical, meaning urgent or emergent, they have you go in immediately; there's really no delay, so rest assured it is not a life or death type of matter.

@@BitterSweet* is probably right. It's probably either anemia, Vitamin D, or something similar. If it was something urgent they would have worked you in right away. I had anemia prior to surgery and low Vit D but I was only on a low daily supplement for each. Post surgery I'm even lower so I'm on an Iron with Calcium to absorb easier and I have to take the 50mu of Vit D for 6 weeks, 3 times a week, and then have more bloodwork. I think most people get hit with these so I wouldn't worry too much. If you are feeling extra fatigued, that could be an indication of either.

The same thing happened to me, and I was scared sh!tless...lol. But it was only that my Vitamin levels were a bit low! The first thing that crosses our minds when we get that kind of call is that we're dying, but honestly, the most likely scenario is your Iron or some Vitamin is a bit lower than optimal! I swear, I've been there. :)

Thanks for some great ideas and support. Was able to get in this morning and the results showed that I am taking in too much Protein and it could. E causing some kidney dysfunction. As I always have 2 Protein Shakes a day that equal 60 grams of protein plus 3 meals with protein as well, I am going to go down one shake to see if that helps and she will be doing a urine collection for 24 hrs in the new year to see if that changes. Go figure, never thought that would be the issue.

There is no way to know, but one thing I'd bet on, it's not critical. If it were, you would already know the results, and you'd be receiving treatment.

OMG I would be going nuts. I am just like you thinking that it would be the worse but like most people have said I am sure it's not since they aren't rushing you in. Try not to stress out.

Good luck-

LA

@@bdcsail, thanks for your update. I have seen a few other posts about this issue and also the development of kidney stones from too much Protein. I'm sure all will be well with your next set of labs. Google vegetables and fruits that promote kidney function and see if you can incorporate some of them into your nutritional plan. Good luck!

Well that's good, nothing too serious. :) Take care of yourself though, follow dr's orders! ;) :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
