Has anyone else experience heart palpitations with losing weight so quickly?

Recommended Posts

I have just had to go and see my doctor because I keep having heart palpitations. I've always had 1 or 2 a week but over the weekend they've been every 5 minutes and sometimes they make me feel dizzy.

I thought maybe my anaemia had returned but my doctor thinks it down to the rapid weight loss. Has anyone else heard of this? I've done a little research on the web and apparently ketosis can cause heart palpitations which is a common side effect of a high Protein, low carbohydrate diet.

I'm just feeling really down as I just seem to be swapping one set of symptoms for another. I was really hoping this band would make me feel better!

Hey Louise, Sorry you have been having this occur. Could it possibly be anxiety? I only ask because about a month before I was banded I had a severe panic attack and actually called the ambulance to come to my house because my heart was racing out of my chest. They assured me that it was not my heart, but anxiety.

I always keep a brown paper bag on my bedside table now that I can breathe into if I start getting heart palpitations. It has not occured recently though thankfully.

I hope you can get to the bottom of it though.

Be well.

Susannah

Thanks for your reply Susannah. I do suffer from depression which is closely linked to anxiety but I've been stabilised on medication for years and have it under control. I've only ever had one panic attack in my life and that was during an IT exam a few years ago when I was under a lot of pressure during my Master's degree.

I don't drink coffee or alcohol so there isn't an obvious reason for why this should be happening.

I have been experiencing this as well! Mine was due to my anemia.. since taking my Iron supplements and my levels coming up a bit, it has subsided and is practically non exsistent..

Hang in there! I am sure they will get to the bottom of it..

Hugz,

Donnamarie :)

I have experienced heart palpitations for years. Sometimes it is a rapid pounding out of my chest type palpitation, and sometimes my rhythm is not right and my heart will 'kick in' to the correct beat, that feels like getting punched in the chest. Sometimes I get both. I have had heart monitors, ekg's and stress tests over the years to find out what causes this. My cardiologist says it is normal, but some people feel it more than others. I had to have a stress test before being banded, and it was normal. I have depression and anxiety, and have found that if I am under stress or worried about something, I get the pounding palpitations. The only thing that helps me is trying to relax and do a hobby that takes my mind off things. I also take prozac and trazadone. My phsychiatrist put me on a daily blood pressure med that helps lower your heart rate. It is called clonidine. It helps tremendously when I am feeling anxious and get the heart pounding sensations. Unlike you, my palpitations have slowed down since surgery. I have found that eating a heavy carb meal will also bring on the palpitations (but not since surgery). Other things such as hyperthyroid can cause palpitations too, or if you have hypothyroid, the med you are taking for it may be too strong. I think some other hormones can cause problems as well, but don't know them off the top of my head.

So, you may be experiencing anxiety. I would see your doctor and discuss your symptoms, they may want you to see a cardiologist too, just to make sure all is ok.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
