Has anyone not told anyone about having surgery?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone not told a single person about having surgery? I mean not a soul!! No parents, friends, or coworkers. I'm single so no husband or boyfriend to tell. I am a little worried about negative remarks but that's not the reason I'm not telling anyone. There are only 2 people that work with me here and one is a guy and the other is my skinny Japanese boss, so I don't really have the urge to tell them.

I do love my boss like a mom but I think she wouldn't really understand my situation. And of course there's the option to tell my actual parents, but my dad absolutely would not understand nor approve of me getting surgery and my mom, I think, wouldn't understand either. At least right now. She would say I'm taking the easy way out and I should be saving my money, etc.

I do plan on telling my mom first maybe after a year and then she can decide if she wants to tell my dad.

Although I do have friends no one is really close enough for me to tell except one or two people. But I'm not even sure if I want to say anything.

I just want to see if I'm alone in not telling anyone.

Do what makes you feel comfortable. Maybe in the future you'll be ready to shout it from the rooftops.

I told my parents I was having a procedure done on my back, just so in case something went wrong they wouldn't be blindsided. They live 2000 miles away. I told nobody else I was even going to be in the hospital. Nobody's business.

I haven't told anyone either. I wanted to surprise my family when I see them at Christmas. I had surgery on 9/17 and I am down 42 lbs. Hope to be down 60 by time Christmas gets here. Oh my hubby knows uh cause he lives with me ha ha plus he is 200% supportive

Nope, you are not the only one. I happily told zero people and I'm so glad. I don't have the stress of anyone looking at my progress and asking for updates. This is not a show, it's my life. The two people I would've shared this with, is no longer on this earth. BTW, at my pre op appt the nurse asked who would be with me on the day of surgery and I told her no one. I then told her no one new I was having the surgery. I asked her if she had anyone besides me not tell anyone. She replied " several".

Interesting topic, how did u all get home? Or were you allowed to drive? I have two kids, my 20 yr old knows, my 12 yr old does not. I did not tell any family. My boyfriend did it with me, he told everyone so they know I did through him. But I had no desire to share or discuss my personal health.

I'm going in for my consult next week and hope for surgery before Thanksgiving (self pay so no insurance hoops) and leaning towards not telling anyone except for my husband. And when I do tell him I'm going for it, I'm going to keep it low key and not make it a "thing". My reason for doing this is I don't want this to define me. I want everyone to just see me when I'm 70 lbs lighter (my goal weight), not as the girl who got sleeved.

For me after I have the surgery I'll stay in the hotel inside the hospital for 2 days and then I'm renting a car when I get back stateside in California to get to LAX and then just rest for a few days and then I'm on a flight back to Japan. Since I don't have my car here I can only walk and ride my bike.

But I think each doctor is different with the times to do everything.

@Noragretz. I arranged for someone to drop me in front of the hospital on the morning of surgery and the same person came back and picked me up the next day. I simply said I was having a procedure. He asked no questions and I didn't volunteer any info. He also took me to get my pain meds on the way home. I actually walked into the pharmacy myself while he stayed in the car. The hospital would not allow you to go home alone.

@Ky89. Are you having surgery in Japan or US?

I'm having surgery in Mexico!! I did check Japan but it's just as expensive as the US :( I know South Korea does a lot of elective surgeries but by the time I thought about researching it I had already made up my mind about Mexico.

I actually have a fear of flying so I think I'm more worried about getting the Mexico than the actual surgery.

Pretty funny considering I had to take a 16 hour flight to Japan :/

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
