Trying to get referral from pcp PIA

So the doctor told me to give the staff the name n number of the bariatric surgeon so I need but than they told me they need the doctors IPN# and diagnostic code.. huh? Why does my pcp need that from the doctor I'm trying to get a referral to

Coding is used for all medical surgery techniques and diagnosis. Maybe your PCP is trying to write a referral letter to the insurance carrier to make sure you're covered by your policy?
