Lap band vs gastric sleeve

I have not had my surgery yet, but I chose sleeve over band for a couple of reasons. The 1st being, my sister in law had it done, barely lost weight, gained it all back and then some. 2nd, I have 2 friends that were sleeved, and they are doing fantastic! I want a permanent change, and to be successful! :)

my personal reasons why I chose the sleeve:

1. I am a volume eater! I may not be shoving Oreos and junk food down my throat, but I overeat, even the good stuff like fruits.

2. I am already anemic, have low Vitamin d and B12 levels, so I did not want to have issues with malabsorption.

3. The thought of having most of my stomach removed doesn't bother me, hut I get the eebie jeebies from the thought of having my intestines movers around.

4. I don't really eat a ton of sweets so the major possibility of dumping syndrome being a deterrent wasn't needed.

5. I also love to bake during the holidays! Like Graham Elliot, he chose the sleeve so he can still taste test what is being made. Like I said in #4, I don't eat a lot of sweets, but being more prone to dumping syndrome wouldn't be good for testing recipes.

6. My mom has a history of colitis and ulcers, and was hospitalized once and had to receive blood transfusions...that alone made me want to leave my intestines alone.

7. I have had Migraines since childhood and NSAIDS help me. They can be used occasionally with sleeve (at least some docs ok it) and with bypass you can't take them at all.

8. With bypass you have a small pouch and your anatomy is changed and if something happens and a medic or doctor needs to scope you, the can perforate your pouch if they aren't advised you have had bypass.

I haven't had my surgery yet but you stated this perfectly well...1-4 are my reasons for choosing the sleeve.

I originally choose lap band but I found these forums and read all the horrible side effects and money people wasted on that procedure. I encourage you to do the same.

Thank you everyone! Now for another question. My husband and I have always enjoyed going out to dinner (go figure right) but we love to go and enjoy each other without kids. I know I will need a huge lifestyle diet change but will I be able to enjoy different foods at some point. Just lots of left overs? Seems so silly but I dont want to give up everything entirely.

At 4 months plus after the sleeve, I can eat anything I want, (well, things with too much sugar do make me feel bad, but I think that is because I stay away from sugar 98% of the time, so when I have a bite of dessert at a party - it makes me feel sick). I followed my Doctor's instructions for all of the progressive types of food, but at 4-6 weeks I was eating regular foods. I don't eat Pasta, white bread or white sugar), I have been steadily losing about 10 lbs a month and have lost 67 lbs as of this post. Now - I go out to eat with my family once a week, I order what I want (excluding high carb things) and yes I always end up with lots of leftovers, but that just makes for great work lunches! Sometimes I just eat something from my husbands plate - but that is rare because he is skinny and doesn't like to share;-D

So when you go into a restaurant and you don't order food... because your gonna share your significant others meal, do you get frown upon? My fiancé said I'd have to order also. We go out a lot since we're both retired so do I ask as the restaurant if we can share? I know probably a dumb question but it's been on my mind.

Most restauants would have no problem with that but may charge you a small "split plate" charge. Usually around $3. I just usually order something small like an appetizer so I can "participate." It's not just the food you go to a restaurant for - it's the experience. Like going to a movie. Your husband sounds like a nice guy. Mine would be highly annoyed if I was picking off his plate all the time.:-)

My Dr stopped doing the bands because he said he was taking out more than putting them in. I chose the sleeve because my Dr felt that it was the best fit for me personally. I had originally thought I would be getting RNY because truthfully I had never heard of VSG. Now I am scheduled for my VSG on 11/3. I personally don't know anyone who has had the VSG surgery, RNY yes but not VSG. That's why I joined this group yesterday, so I can learn from people who are living it????

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
