Duodenal Switch / Weight loss stall

Recommended Posts

I've known only a couple people personally who had this procedure. They both had such a 'stall'.

And in reality, most of the trouble I've encountered with my own 'failure to hit Goal' really begs the question of just how what 'my' goal determined.

So you're 7/10 successful??? Or 3/10 failure? Really depends on how we define such matters, don't you think?

Congratulations on your progress, in any case.

For DSers when we are trying to achieve goal weight it comes down to going back to basics, eliminating Carbs from your diet as much as possible especially simple carbs like sugars, breads, Cookies, anything white really... and increasing Protein and Fat. 100GMS of Protein minimum and I've stopped counting Fat Grams and just add fat to everything.

Also make sure you are still getting enough hydration, eliminate anything dehydrating such as diet sodas, coffee, and alcohol to name a few. Also make sure you are eating enough calories to allow your body to not be in starvation mode.

myfitnesspal is a great APP to use, and you don't have to use it forever, but you have to be honest about portion sizes and tracking everything. If you are a big exerciser you may be building up muscle which weighs more than fat.

That's all I've got!

I'm only 8 months out from my DS surgery so I can't speak for stalls at over 2yrs post op. But we do know that at approx 12-18 months post op our stomachs will stretch to approx 75% that of a "normal" person. Your stomach at 2 yrs is likely as big as it's going to get, and no longer the lil 25% size it was. That just means you need to work harder at weight loss nowadays, as compared to the early days when you had zero appetite. You CAN lost those last 30 lbs if you want to badly enough. Do you? That's the question you need to answer. I've lost 173 lbs so far and WILL ACHIEVE my target weight before my surgical anniversary on May 8th. The rule I have for whether something is possible or not, is the suit case rule. Simply put, if I had a suit case here with $1 million dollars in it and you'd get it if you lost those 30 lbs...would you do it? I suspect the answer is yes. If I asked you to lift a truck over your head, no matter what money was offered, you couldn't do it. Lose those 30 lbs and be able to know you achieved your goal! Pay the price and claim your reward. You've come too damn far to wimp out now.

Good point made. I am 20 pounds from my goal and down 116 pounds. I had surgery on 6/30/14 so I am doing well. I use myfitnesspal and exercise 3-4 times a week. I have been in a plateau for 4 weeks. I just need to let the time pass focus on the rules of DS and the weight will come off. I try not to eat more than 50 grams of carbs a day. I do not count calories or fat. I just count the carbs. Thanks for posting and reminding us that we need to "pay the price" and claim our reward.

I can't speak to a DS related stall specifically, but I lost 50 lb on my own before having surgery. I'm not one to "diet", and psychologically I work better with a positive rather than a negative, so I treat my self to the fancy pilates classes I like, and make or buy myself my favorite healthy meals when I'm really struggling. You will have stalls. For me, my body would refuse to drop any weight for a month or more, and then, when it was ready, I'm drop 10 lbs. pretty quickly. Treat yourself with kindness, and your body will reward you.

dsdesigna spelled it out pretty well. What is a typical eating day like for you? If you're comfortable, you can post it.

I stayed at 900 calories for four years after the sleeve and still regained. I thought i would lose slowly, but I still gained weight. While it would be nice to make the million, once our abused metabolisms shut down, it can stop or gain, and nothing we can do. I am hoping the DS malabsorption will help. If it doesn't I refuse to punish myself...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
