secret surgery: what else can you tell someone if they ask?

Recommended Posts

I have decided to keep my surgery a secret. Major reason for keeping it a secret is lack of understanding and all the misconceptions. I don't like to justify myself, plus I am pretty private.

so my question is, if it does come out that I had surgery, what can I tell them that would jive with a VSG? gerd surgery? haital hernia repair? I need something good, if it comes up.

I am a week out of surgery now and have this week off of work. no one knows why I took off time. told them it was just a staycation. told no family. but I had auto reply on my work e-mail and sister (with a mouth the size of texas) sent me an e-mail to work and had my auto reply kick back to her. Now she knows that I was off..... she asked if I was on vacation and I replied "yup". hopefully it can die there.... but if not.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I just wanted to surround myself with my positive support people. Only 4 people knew that I was going to have surgery. There have been a few people that have asked if I was ok. Mainly from my kiddos' school, or running into them in town running to the store, etc. I just say that I had a Hiatal Hernia repair. I did. It was a large one. So, I'm not lying. I'm just not telling them all the details of my surgery. This was my decision and I didn't want to hear opinions of others, negative comments or be gossiped about. My sister in law is horrible. Her nickname in our family is "Mouth". If she knows the whole town and surrounding towns know too. Ugh! It is so high school and that was 20 years ago. Like I told my hubby, if I have to go to the bathroom, I don't need to tell everyone about my business that goes on behind a closed door. People don't need to know all the details of every aspect of your life. Privacy is a good thing. But, you do need to have the positive support system that you can trust to do just that. It is important for your overall well being.

Medically speaking, a gall bladder surgery, or a hernia repair would jive with the recovery time and scars from VSG. If you still have your gall bladder, I would go with the hernia repair though... it could be embarrassing to explain if you do in fact need to have it taken out down the road (lots of WLS patients do). For that matter, you could just say it was an exploratory laparotomy to investigate some random stomach pains that you had been having, but they didn't find anything.

I just went with stomach surgery and left it at that. People are generally too polite to pry any further than that.

I went with two-week staycation for most people and, for family, a hiatal hernia repair.

End of problem.

Oh, and I was one of those who had to have gall bladder surgery post-VSG. Four weeks later, in fact. So now I can explain the holes in my tummy if anyone winds up seeing them.

Other people are actually less interested in our stuff than we believe.

A.

I just said "surgery" to most of my coworkers to explain the time off and that was it. Only my boss' boss (a dear friend of mine), one of my friends in another department, and the HR rep that received my FMLA paperwork know what kind of surgery I had. As for family, my husband, parents, and sisters know. I don't know if they've told any extended family and I don't really care if they do. Luckily, my family (and extended family) are all very loving and supportive, so I'm not worried about more of them finding out. Oh, I also told my husband's parents. I don't know if they told any of his siblings or not.

I only told my partner and two of my closest friends about my op. I didn't tell my work what I was having done, just referred to a 'minor op' and was vague. Now that it's done, I've told everyone that it was a hiatal hernia repair. It's not a complete lie, as I did end up having quite a major one as part of my surgery. Symptoms all fit, including the dodgy eating - a full third of my stomach was in my chest cavity so it's expected that I'd struggle to eat properly for awhile. Plus, if you ever need one in future, it could happen twice.

It would be really embarrassing to have your gall bladder or appendix out again!!!

Good luck with everything x

Thanks all for the replies. I think I will fall back on haital hernia if I need too. I'll just deflect.

I've been telling people I had hernia surgery. I didn't come back to work drastically skinny and it looks like I will be a slow loser, so I think I am going to be good. Just don't want to share with anyone at work.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for the family part of things. I did tell my family for two reasons (1) it would be too hard to try and explain away why I can't eat very much because two family members have already had weight loss surgery (one on each side) that were open about it so people would be like "yeah, now tell us the truth" and (2) I have family members that desperately need to lose weight so if I can be a good role model, I am so there!

I thought about keeping it a secret because I knew most everyone I know would disagree with it. Of coarse I was right. People become very judgmental thinking the reasons I've made this decision is out of vanity. No one takes into consideration all my medical issues that I've had for years and how this surgery will help me come off some of these meds, lose some of thes diagnoses and gain my life back. And yeah, I hate being fat. I cant stand the way I look or how uncomfortable I am all the time. I've had to defend myself several times since making this decision. I then decided who cares what they think. I'm doing this for myself not them. The funny thing is the main people judging me is my overweight family. They also think it's the easy way out. Ha!!! I'm one month out and so far there's been nothing easy about it. Not to mention the continued health and exercise maintenance that is required. Idiots!! My advice is... Don't lie about it. Be proud of the decision you've made to turn your life around. The criticism only makes us stronger. Let them deal with their sin of judgment.

I am not planning to tell most people. My plan is to tell people who inquire about weight loss I'm doing a lot of hard work and participating in an intensive medically supervised program, which is the absolute truth since the surgery is only a small part of the program I'm going through. I am also not going to tell anyone outside of my bariatric team how much weight I've lost.

Sleeve2bFree ... that's tough dealing with family members who are idiots.

That's precisely why I didn't tell any of my family. I didn't want to EVER have to have any of those conversations.

I feel like your business is your business, people are rude as he'll when it comes to surgery and procedures because they have no knowledge, no understanding of what is going on, or even what it's like to live in a body like ours..close friends and family members yes I will tell because they have your best interest at heart. But like random co-workers and friends of friends! No..its your life you made this decision, it's no ones business but your own. I wouldn't give no explanation other than I am having surgery. If they pry further just say: I rather not discus my medical problems with people. They will get the picture and keep it moving imo!

I plan to only tell close friends and family however no doubt my dad will tell my uncles etc who I rarely ever talk too. But who cares I'm trying to fell better and get better for myself. Who I have told that I plan to have the op said to get it get it or do it do it as told from a friend on Facebook lol.

If my dads side of the family disagree to hell with them as long as I end up healthier and happy that's all that counts rite.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
