Were you drug tested before surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had my psyc consult the other day and I said something to her about casually smoking pot. She told me to make sure I didn't smoke anytime near my surgery date because the anesthesiologist will require a drug test.

I haven't smoked in awhile and am not worried about it but found it curious because I've never heard any mention of this from anyone else.

Mine didn't, but I think some people's do. Of course for me it probably would have been pointless, given the number of prescription medications I am already on.

I have my upper GI next week and my sleep study in 2 weeks - I was under the impression that was all I had left to do. My doctor had blood work done for thyroid testing awhile ago.

That would suck if they sprung this on me/someone at the last minute - if I didn't know about it there could have been a chance I would fail - lol.

Thanks guys - I was just curious. I feel like I'm never going to finish all these pre-op tests and new things seem to keep popping up. (I'm real nervous about having to do more than 1 sleep study)

I will have what they call "labs" which will check for anything on May 24th. Smoke, infections, drugs, etc. My dtr. won't operate if you smoke.

My doctor didn't do a drug test, but during the 'class' he said how if you do drugs you have to quit before getting banded. I gave up the casual pot years ago when I wanted a real job.. ahhhh growing up!

I believe the reason is because you could have trouble coming out of your anesthesia if you smoked marijuana the morning of your surgery.

Never did the stuff so wasn't an issue for me. I did have to take a mandatory pregnancy test the day of surgery before they put me on the guerny (sp). I told the nurse that if it came back positive I'd be in the National Enquirer for immaculate conception though. And that I'd split the photo fee prize w/her!

LOL doto! Doctor's can't trust you on those things.. When I was 14, I was on B/C to regulate my crazy periods. I wasn't sexually active. But because I was on it, doctors would NOT believe me, so everytime I had something done at a clinic they would blood test me for pregnancy first.

Yeah - no doctors ever believe you - lol.

My boyfriend had a vasectomy last year so I know there's no chance. My regular doc just put me on Tricore for high cholesterol, instead of her first choice of RX, because I am of child bearing age. :rolleyes

I had my upper GI done today and they required a pregnancy test too. (they put me under but didn't drug test me)

Turns out I have 2 ulcers!!!!!

Candle, some Dr's may be different, but I have never heard of them drug testing anyone. I know quite a few women that have had different Dr's in the area and no one ever mentioned that. If you do occasionally now don't worry about it. I do and had no complications at all before during or after the surgery. Your paying them and as long as you passed your stress test and jumped through all their hoops, you have noting to worry about at all.

Unless you have insurance like some of these other people, and that sucks.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
