Having kids after Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone experienced this? I'm pretty sure we'll have another baby but not soon at all. Was wondering if the pregnancy was high risk? Did you have to do anything differently? Did you have a natural childbirth? Thanks guys!!

It is absolutely safe to get pregnant once your weight stabilizes. This surgery actually helps to boost your fertility and also resolve many metabolic and reproductive abnormalities. But it is always safer to wait for at least 18 months after the surgery to get pregnant,to go through a safe and stress free pregnancy.

I knew someone who got pregnant maybe 4months after having the sleeve, and then again maybe another 4 months after having that baby. She's 3 year's out now and claims to have lost 160 some odd lbs (187lbs being her lowest). I plan on having another child after the sleeve as well and it's a big reason for me getting it, But not until I've reached goal..

I'm not sure if they would consider it high risk just because of WLS but for me it will be considering my first daughter was born early due to complications and the second pregnancy was a miscarriage at 12 weeks. I have heard you have that they make you see a nutritionist through it though just to make sure you're getting the right nutrition for baby and you.

My doctor told me you can get pregnant after having the sleeve but he doesn't recommend trying to get pregnant the first 12 months after surgery seeing that we are trying to lose the weight and especially since in the first year after our bodies go through a big change and we are trying to keep in as much nutrients and Proteins for ourselves. I can't imagine trying to keep in enough to carry a baby. But I also want to have another baby and that is one of the reasons why I am having the surgery besides other reasons of course.i don't think it's considered high risk though unless u have had other complications in the past. But good luck with your success

I was told to wait 2 years after surgery because your chances of miscarriage are much higher the closer you are to surgery. So waiting Un till your body is leveled out is best.

Let me just comment on the woman who I knew, like I said she got pregnant soon after surgery and had spent the past 2 years pregnant basically and both pregnancies were textbook without any serious complications, both children are healthy and doing well. I think its a personal choice wheather or not you choose to get pregnant a year after surgery or two years, would I suggest getting pregnant before your one year out?..No, but some of us have less to lose then others and if by a year out you are at a healthy weight and your OB and physician give you the go ahead I don’t see a reason to wait any longer.

"Pregnancy after weight-loss surgery isn't an issue. The only concern is [getting pregnant] in the period of rapid weight loss," says Philip Schauer, director of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic's Bariatric and Metabolic Institute.

"To protect women and their babies from potential malnutrition, doctors recommend that women not get pregnant until 18 months after surgery. A report in a November 2005 issue of theJournal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing explained that getting pregnant at least 18 months after surgery reduces the "potential for maternal and fetal malnutrition and small-for-gestational-age infants." By then, Schauer says, a woman should have reached a stable weight and be able to provide her baby with enough nutrition."

I also know many people who have gotten pregnant very soon after WLS and have had normal pregnancies. They are however closely monitored by a nutritionist, OBGYN, and their surgeon. I agree with you at what point people choose to get pregnant is up to them. Being able to conceive is one of the biggest reasons I am choosing to get this surgery as well. I am choosing not to put a time frame on it although I would like to hit goal before getting pregnant.

It even said: It reduces the "potential" for malnourished babies and mother's. which means there is always a risk that it could happen especially being closer to your surgery date (example: post-op 2-4 months)..But 18 months sounds more like a suggestion to me then a mandatory time line.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
