Experiences with Phentermine?

Recommended Posts

There is a new drug that combines Phentermine and Topamax. My doctor has quite a few patients on it now and says most are finding success with it so far.

I was taking Phentermine along with Topamax lost weight but the Topamax gave me a headache.

Tamster01,

That's odd. Isn't Topamax used primarily to treat headaches/migraines? I took Topamax over 15 years ago for Migraine headaches and noticed that decreased hunger was a side effect of the drug. I assumed the combination of phentermine and topamax was put together because they both help you lose weight and the Topamax would lesson or treat headaches caused by the phentermine. Most uppers like Phentermine cause headaches, or they have for me at least.

Topamax itself helps reduce weight, not just for headaches. That is why it is used in combination with phentermine. I still gained weight on phentermine, so I wasn't ever impressed lol. FYI phentermine was half of PhenPhen, another combination product. The other half is what was taken of the market, which was the main culprit in the coinciding mitral valve disease reported with the combination.

This helped me lose a lot of weight until I went off of it, I went from 160 to 130, and gained back up to 190 in less than 6 months I have always felt taking phentermine did me more harm than good.

I was on this medicine. Lost 60 pounds when 60 pounds would have put me at a kind of semi decent weight. Once I stopped the medicine I gained it all back plus doubled.

fen-phen was a combination of Phentermine and Fenfluramine, Fenfluramine was removed from the market as it caused pulmonary hypertension in 3% of users. I loved it me and my wife both used it but we only got ot use it for 3 months before it was pulled off the market. Tried the replacement which was Phen-Pro aka phentermine and Prozac, which turned both of us into walking meth zombies. Not fun. lol

Ditto what @@JerseyCityGal said. I had this prescribed about 15 years ago and dropped a ton of weight. I worked out like crazy and the extra energy from the drug really helped. Unfortunately, once I stopped taking it I regained the weight.

I have taken Phentermine both pre and post-surgery. Pre-surgery I took it so I could stop eating because my eating was getting out of control. Back then, I'd need two caplets at a time.

Post-surgery, I would take half a pill on occasion and that would be just enough to get me through those times when my emotions were running high and I just wanted to eat, or I had intense cravings for junky food that just would not go away. The half a pill didn't make me jittery and was just enough to take my mind off the food until the emotions or cravings had passed. When I felt it kick in, I would always sit down and write out why I thought the cravings/emotions were happening and how I could handle them without food so I could look back on them next time.

Phentermine can be a useful tool if you are taking it in conjunction with other things. My doctor would not give it to me unless I was also in therapy for my eating disorders (which I was and continue to be), and as a supplement to my sleeve it has been awesome. I haven't taken it for about five months now, but I know its there if I need it.

I take Wellbutrin (Bupropion) for help with post surgery emotional eating and depression. It doesn't reduce hunger, but that is what the surgery is suppose to do. Phentermine is habit forming and raises blood pressure. I wanted this surgery to get healthy, which means isolating drugs like phentermine and tobacco.

I was prescribed Adipex (Phentermine) when I was in my pre-Band medically supervised diet back in 2008. I lost 70 lbs with it (and doctor supervision and diet journaling) prior to surgery. At first, taking it made me a little nauseated, so I didn't want to eat - therefore instant appetite suppressant. Then it started to mess with my blood pressure and my sleeping. I took it for almost a year, I think, before and for a little while after lapband surgery. Getting off of it didn't cause the weight to return (or bring its friends), but that was because of the lapband.

Since then, I have had trouble with my LapBand (having revision surgery in Feb 2015), and I was prescribed it once again. Not so good this time.

- If I take it, I'm so jittery that my hands shake and my writing is almost illegible for about 3-4 hours following the dose.

- If I take it, I am guaranteed that I will NOT sleep that night. Maybe 15 minutes total all night. Not even kidding. I would take it between 4-5 am - come night time, I close my eyes and they continue to dart around like I'm in an "awake" REM cycle, my mind races... insomnia is hell.

- If I take it, I will have poor BP results - even a day later.

I have a couple weeks' supply of them left, and I'd have to be REALLY desperate to take them, despite the weight I've gained following the fail of my band.

On a related topic: My mom took the Phen-Fen (Fen-Phen?) concoction back in the late 80s and lost 123 lbs in 8 months - you couldn't nail her down, she was on such a speed-high during that time. However, about 10-12 years later, she was awarded part of the big lawsuit settlement after having an artificial heart valve placed as a result of the "non-phentermine" part of the drug.

My personal opinion - I appreciated the drug years ago, but I'm no longer on the Adipex bandwagon.

I lost a good friend of mine on this medication. She kept losing weight and loved the results. But once she stopped taking it she gained all plus more weight. So she started up again and lost the weight and she didn't want to take a chance to stop. So she kept taking it and died.

I hear it is addictive but then again Everybody is different.

At one time they took it off the shelves because so many people were dying from it.

But it is back on the market because they took out one of the ingredients.

Ever since the change was made....I haven't heard any bad feedback on it.

So I thought of letting you know. You can always ask your doctor what is the safest way.

I had the RNY done in 2013 and it is doing pretty well. I lost 87 pounds. No regrets. May God bless you and yours. :-)

I took Phen Fen before it was taken off the market. I thought it was GREAT. I lost 45 lbs in 1 months.

I would be even painting the doors of my apt. at 2 in the mroning cause of the energy burst.

It was just speed. I lost lmost 100 lbs and I was 230 when I started.

Well guess what, they took it off the market and I gained it all back plus some.

Crushed me.

I had gastic bypass 22 months ago and have never looked back.

I really don't think that the drugs work cause s soon as you get off of them, BOOM the weight comes back on. My opinion.

Find something that will work for YOU and then once you get the tool (either the band, sleeve or gastric) everything will fall in place.

Good Luck

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
